What is Causing My Tinnitus?

To determine whether the underlying medical condition may be the cause of your tinnitus, your doctor will give you a general physical examination, including a careful examination of your ears. Be sure to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, as tinnitus can be a side effect of some medications.

If the source of the problem is not clear, you may be referred to an otologist or an otolaryngologist (both ear specialists). As a component of your test, you might be given a sound-related assessment called an audiogram. An imaging strategy, for example, an MRI or CT check, may likewise be prescribed to uncover any auxiliary issue.

What Are the Treatments for Tinnitus?

If your tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying medical condition, then the first step is to treat the condition. But if tinnitus persists even after treatment, or if it is exposed to loud noise, health professionals recommend various non-medical options that can help reduce or mask unwanted noise (below See masking device). Sometimes, tinnitus goes on spontaneously, without interference. However, it should be understood that not all tinnitus can be eliminated or reduced, regardless of the cause.

If you have difficulty coping with your tinnitus, you may find counseling and support groups helpful.

If the cause of your tinnitus is excessive earwax, your doctor will clean your ears by suction with a small rotating device called a diuretic, or gently flush it out with warm water. If you have an ear infection, you may be given prescription ear drops containing hydrocortisone to help relieve itching and an antibiotic to fight the infection.

Surgery may be necessary in rare cases of tumors, cysts or otosclerosis (calcium accumulation on the ear bone).

If your tinnitus is the result of temporomandibular joint syndrome - sometimes called TMJ - then your doctor will probably refer you to an orthodontist or other dental specialist for proper treatment.

Medicines for tinnitus

Several drugs have been studied to treat tinnitus. For some, treatments with low doses of anti-anxiety medications - such as Valium or antidepressants such as Elavil - help reduce tinnitus. Use of steroids placed in the middle ear along with an anti-anxiety medication called alprazolam has been shown to be effective for some people. Valium or antidepressants such as Elavil - help reduce tinnitus.

Understanding Tinnitus - Diagnosis and Treatment

Lidocaine, a drug used to treat some types of abnormal heart rhythms, has been shown to  the drug and therefore it is not recommended and is not used for tinnitus.relieve tinnitus for some people, but must be given intravenously or in the middle ear to do this effectively. However, the benefits of lidocaine almost always outweigh the risks of the drug and therefore it is not recommended and is not used for tinnitus.

Masking device

Many have also benefited from tinnitus masks, similar to hearing aids, which play a more pleasant sound than the internal noise produced by tinnitus. A new device is a tinnitus device, which is a combination of hearing aids and masks.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

TRT relies on the brain's natural ability to "habituate" a signal, filtering it to a subconscious level so that it does not reach conscious perception. The habit does not require any conscious effort. People often get used to many hearing sounds - air conditioners, computer fans, refrigerators, and gentle showers.

TRT has two parts:

A person with tinnitus will play some source of neutral sound everywhere he or she is wearing the sound-generating ear.

A person with tinnitus receives one-on-one counseling.

cognitive therapy

It is a form of counseling that helps a person to modify their reaction to tinnitus. It works best when combined with other forms of therapy in the form of therapy or medicine.

Biofeedback

It is a relaxation technique that helps people manage stress by changing their response. Some people find that it is helpful in reducing tinnitus.

Dental treatment

Some professionals believe that tinnitus may be caused by a problem with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the area where the jawbone is attached to the head, just in front of the ear. They suggest that dentistry can relieve symptoms of tinnitus, since the jaw muscles and nerves are closely connected to those present in the ear.
