A Maintenance Checklist of Keeping Your Home in Order

Since your home is one of your biggest investments, it only makes sense to put a lot of effort into its maintenance. But, keeping it well-maintained all year round can be tiresome. So, consider breaking your tasks down by creating a to-do list. Here are some of the things you shouldn't forget to include.

Exterior Inspection

Take the time to check the outside walls for any damage, such as chipping paint and loose sidings. Also, inspect the foundation for cracks, and if you find one, call a professional to give it a once-over. That minor issue may cause water seeping into your basement, which can lead to costly repairs.

Basement Maintenance

Many homeowners tend to overlook their basements, especially if the space is used primarily for storage. It's best to give this part of your home a thorough inspection at least once a year. Get rid of the things that you don't use or need. You may also move whatever you can elsewhere to minimize the clutter.

Garage Cleaning

The garage is another area that's often neglected. With all the clutter that's probably in there, you might want to schedule a whole weekend to get rid of everything. Start by safely disposing of any hazardous items, such as motor oils or pesticides.

Roofing Inspection

Inspect the roof for leaks or damage, especially right after the winter or heavy rainfall. Check for loose or missing shingles as well as cracks in the vent pipes and chimneys.

Gutter Cleaning

Cleaning the gutters regularly will get rid of the leaves, small branches, and other debris that may have collected over time. Be sure that when flushing the downspouts, the water flow is directed away from your house to keep moisture from damaging the siding.

Plumbing Maintenance

Depending on your home's age, you might want to do some major inspection of all your plumbing fixtures, making sure they're still in good working condition. Check the pipes, including those under the sinks, for any signs of leaks. Repair what you can, but call a plumber for issues that you need help with.

You may also want to give your bathtub a once-over. Walk-in tubs can be a source of infections if not maintained well. Plan on cleaning it weekly to get rid of soap scum and oil residue. Just be sure to use a non-abrasive cleaner to protect its surface quality.
