There can be many reasons to pain such as an injury, accidents, muscle strain or even arthritis. What’s common in these conditions is the pain itself, which differs in terms of it being mild or excruciating. Nowadays, topical pain relief products are more preferred than using pain killers, which can cause side effects.

When it comes topicals, many of you would think that they are not that effective and are only meant for mild pain. But, that’s not true. Sure, that these topicals wouldn’t do much to reduce the pain but, they do help to manage it.

Active ingredients present in Topical products:

Most topicals includes creams, gels, sprays and nowadays, patches too. Most of these products contain Methyl salicylate, which is often used as counterirritant that stimulates sensory receptors in the skin and may block pain sensations. Also, some rub ons contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which decreases the inflammatory reaction when absorbed into the skin.

The common ingredients present topical creams, gels and sprays are:

  • Methyl salicylate

Also known as oil of wintergreen, Methyl salicylate provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. It works by providing a distraction from the pain by easily getting absorbed into the skin.

  • NSAIDS:

Most of you would have heard about the NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and even used them as Tylenol, ibuprofen and Aspirin. These NSAIDS when absorbed in the skin, providing effective pain relief.

  • Menthol:

Famous for its cooling effect, menthol is an active ingredient in almost all of the traditional rub-in products. It works by providing a pleasing effect, which in turn counteracts the pain. The cooling effect of it desensitizes the nerve endings.

  • Capsaicin:

Capsaicin is a compound found in chili peppers, which gives chillies their hot, spicy taste. The burning sensation produced by the chemical shut downs the neurons, which also causes the pain to cease.

However, because of its burning sensation, lots of people don’t continue the use of topical products with Capsaicin in it.

Some of the most commonly used pain relief products include:

  1. Pain Relief Gels such as Tiger Balm, Iodex Balm, Sensur Rubefacient, Nurament oil, Flexiflam gel etc.
  2. Pain Relief Patches like Viopatch Herbal Pain Relief Patch, Salonpas patch, NU Patch, etc.
  3. Pain Relief Sprays like Relispray Nitron, Omnigel Spray, Volini Spray, Moov Spray, etc.

The best part of using topicals is that they are safe and are also non-addicting as well. And always read the label because in case of using the topicals with NSAID, you have to monitor your NSAID use while using them.
