4 Sewing Habits Every Sewist Should Follow

It takes herculean efforts and dedication to master every sewing project. Every sewist is well aware of the fact that sewing habits could make or break their projects. While good habits help to enhance not only the results but also the sewing experience. Bad habits, on the other hand, always take the whole experience in the opposite direction. 

Irrespective of how hard or easy the sewing project is, there are certain sewing habits, considered as good by several experienced sewers, you must follow. 

Increase the Stitch Length

It’s normal for sewists to pick short stitch length for their projects. But when you’re working on a garment, even a 2.5mm long stitch is short. The thread breaks when tension is placed on the cloth and when you’re working with a 2.5mm stitch length, it tears around the stitches. Always remember sewing a seam with short stitches takes time. Also, they’re hard to remove. Consider increasing the stitch length to 3.0. Once you get comfortable, go for a 3.5mm stitch length for sewing garments.

Choose appropriate fabrics as per Garment design

Before you finalize the pattern, it’s important to choose the fabric. While picking up fabric, be sure to consider all of its characteristics. When you select a challenging design, without giving second thoughts on the chosen fabric, chances are the project will fail. If you’re interested to work with an unfamiliar pattern, be sure to pick an easy design first. 

Never say no to hand sewing

Hand sewing is a no-no for many sewers. What they don’t understand is hand sewing helps to achieve a superior finish than a machine-stitched seam. Zippers, for instance, are difficult to install using a machine but are comparatively easier with hand sewing. Not only your stitches are accurate but also you don’t have to pause all the time to remove pins. 

Keep scissors sharp

When you want your project to turn out to be great, invest in quality scissors and sharpen them frequently. Whenever one gets dull, send it for sharpening, and continue with another sharped pair. The same rule applies to rotary cutters. The moment you notice dullness, change the blade. The reason is not only bad scissors or cutters shred the fabric but also diminish the finish of your results.
