How to Haul Items in a Pickup Truck

Whether you rented a truck to move furniture, or purchased one to haul cargo year-round, here are some beginner tips on how to haul items in a pickup.

Vehicle

Before you load the truck it is important to know what it’s capability is. The payload limit or payload capacity is the grand total of weight including cargo and passengers that the truck can handle. This can usually be found on a sticker on the inside rim of the driver’s door.

The tonnage and engine power of the vehicle will also be a clue as to what it’s overall strength and hauling parameters are. For example, a truck with a V-8 HEMI engine can haul almost double the weight of one with a V-6 engine. Likewise, the tonnage or towing capacity of trucks starts with midsize and 1/2 ton and goes all the way up to full ton. If you plan to tow a camper or trailer they will usually have a recommendation on what strength of vehicle is needed to pull it.

Cargo

Next, it’s time to think about the cargo. Truck beds come in a variety of lengths and widths, so measure the bed or check your owner’s manual if you have any doubts on whether or not the items will fit in the space. Consider how you will wrap or protect the objects from the elements as you transport them. Tarps, covers, blankets, padding, and other forms of protection can be very useful to prevent scratching and debris or weather damage while on the road.

Start by loading heavy items toward the cab and large items on the outside edges. Lay furniture on it’s side or back. Then you can fill in the middle of the bed with smaller boxes and more lightweight objects. Items should be secured in place with no chance of movement. You can use straps and tie downs if necessary to help hold them still.

Safety

As well as making sure the items are taken care of, you want to make sure you and your passengers are safe as well. Certain hardware pieces like heavy duty headache racks can help provide extra protection for those in the cab if you were to stop suddenly, and a bed rack can help secure loose items in place.

Besides installing additional hardware like heavy duty headache racks, there are other choices you can make to give your hauling job the best chance for success. Plan your trip wisely and avoid transporting items on a day with inclement weather, high winds, or heavy traffic. Take smoother paved roads when possible and discourage theft by covering items and not leaving the truck unattended for too long.
