How Does A Dimmable LED Works?

Posted by ledbulbs on July 6th, 2012

The Dimmable Led Bulbs have indeed enhanced the advantages extended by the dimmable compact fluorescent lights or the incandescent light. The previous generation of the dimmable lights offered easy manoeuvrability of the intensity of the overhead lighting, better energy efficiency and the like, all the features which are present in the dimmable LED with the extra advantages of LED technology. Here we have brought for you a primer on how the LED dimmable works which will make you more aware of the Led technology.

To begin with, unlike its incandescent counterparts a dimmable LED does not function by increasing or decreasing the intensity of light. LED light bulbs are emitted from a semiconductor chip. The light emitted is always constant as if being emitted at the full voltage. The level maintained would be of maximum light and current, as in LED you can either switch on or off but you cannot change to some intermediate level. Instead of that the dimmable LED bulbs create a dimming effect. There are two methods through which the dimming effect in LED is created.

  • Pulse width modulation led

In such modulation the LED lamps is wirelessly immaculately programmed to split its time cycle to create on and off effect. Time cycles are measured in thousandth of a second or milliseconds split into intervals when the light is on or off. For a brighter light the on period is stretched where as for a dimmer light off period is prolonged. Of course you must be wondering why the light does not appear to blink. Well, the human eye assesses light by the average amount of light emitted from the source. If the rate of change of light is very fast, a human eye cannot detect the gaps. Leveraging this characteristic of human eyes the frequency of PWM LED is set on very low pulse, which is imperceptible to human eyes.

  • Analog dimming

In this method the forward current being supplied to the LED is controlled to dim LED. Though this method indeed is simple in implementation and also betters the efficiency of the LED, the performance suffers.

The technology of dimming the light is indeed an impressive one. It allows you to alter the brightness as per your requirement. During reading you can increase the brightness whereas while watching television you can dim the lights. So try to save energy and replace your conventional lights with dimmable LED GU10.You can easily avail these lighting options at any good online store and that too for a very reasonable price.
