A list of some of commonplace questions associated with braces

Braces are excellently effective when it comes down to treating crooked teeth. Braces can help make your smile very attractive. However, when one has to install braces, one inevitably has to deal with a lot of questions and doubts. Sometimes lack of knowledge on the subject can lead to anxiety and hence in this article we aim at trying to answer some of these questions so as to help you with your doubts.

How long does one have to wear braces?

This is a very commonly asked question. Of course this varies from person to person. When you visit an orthodontist for examination before you put on the braces, he will most likely give a rough estimation of the duration for which you shall have the braces on. This will be based on the assessment made by your orthodontist. It does not take a medical degree to figure out that the more misaligned your teeth are, the longer it will take for them to be aligned properly and fixed, which means it will take longer time, comparatively, before they can be removed. It has to be understood that the time frame which your dentist will give you is only estimation. The actual time frame may vary according to the way your teeth react to the presence of braces. And based on the observations made by the doctor, he/she shall decide on the date or the actual time period for which you will have to have it on.

In case of children and teenagers it is usually seen that the time period does not extend beyond two years, unless the misalignment is severe, in which case it can take up to 3 and a half years, and no longer than that. 2 years is the average time frame. In case of mild misalignment, it should not take no more than one year. In some cases it usually takes less than a year (such as half a year). If you have had braces in the past, and now you need to fix a little bit of misalignment which has happened recently, you shall need braces for less than a year or just six months.

How long does the discomfort stay?

It is true that braces can be irksome immediately after installation. In other words, braces can cause mild issues in your mouth such as pain and pressure on the jaws. However, the good thing is that it is severe only in rare cases. In most cases it is mild and it lasts for a very short period of time. also, you can experience discomfort when the wires are tightened.
