Movie Review (Synopsis):
This darkly comic, genre-bending piece of gonzo journalism from international provocateur Mads Brügger rips the corroded lid off the global scheme of political corruption and exploitation happening in one of the most dangerous places on the planet: the Central African Republic. Armed with a phalanx of hidden cameras, black-market diplomatic credentials and a bleeding-edge wit, Brügger transforms himself into an outlandish caricature of a European-African consul. As he immerses himself in the life-threatening underworld of nefarious bureaucrats, Brügger encounters blood diamond smuggling, bribery, and even murder -- while somehow managing to crack amazing razor-sharp barbs at every step along the way.

The Dictator, comes an investigative journalism documentary about a man who becomes an ambassador to uncover the blood diamond trade in Africa. Nominated for Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, The Ambassador forgoes the typical fly on the wall approach and instead interactions directly as an affluent diplomat.

The Ambassador starts off with a man who clearly does not want anyone to find out about the conversation that he is about to have. First he makes sure that all phones are off and then says that what he is about to say “was never said”. But little does he know that there is a hidden camera recording him the whole time. The man turns out to be Colin Evans, a former Royal Marine who is now in charge of an online brokerage for diplomatic passports.

The hidden camera rolls as Evans explains that he recognizes that the goal is to have uncluttered access with diplomatic credentials in and out of a diamond-producing zone. He explains that this is a highly sought after position to be in and the consequences of getting caught could mean ending up dead in a ditch in Africa. But taking such big risks means receiving big rewards.
Mads’ goal is to use his diplomat status to get his hands on as many diamonds as possible but he must do so without making that so apparent as the blood diamond industry is heavily monitored. So he comes up with a plan to open up a factory that produces matches as a front for the diamonds. Mads, who is rarely seen without a cigarette or a drink in hand, makes good connections with a diamond mine owner name Mr. Gillbert. But with each step forward he takes two steps back as conflicts arise in direct correlation to the risks he takes that makes diplomatic immunity a life or death affair.

Being that blood diamonds are the large centerpiece of the documentary I was confused as to why it failed to educate viewers on what they were until the last five minutes. It is then that it informs viewers that diamonds from an area of conflict without the right papers are blood diamonds. It is not quite what I would consider common knowledge and if it is then why mention it in the documentary at all?documentary at all?

Brügger isn’t exactly blowing any whistles here. Let’s be honest with ourselves: you probably don’t care or think much about the Central African Republic. You possibly didn’t even know that it was a country before right now. But as its name should indicate, it is in central Africa, so regardless you’d still probably assume that it is a violent, corrupt, and impoverished nation. The strength of Brügger’s exposé isn’t that he’s showing us something we were unaware of, but that he’s showing us how it happens. Furthermore, he’s not just showing us in a Michael Moore tenacious-man-on-the-street way. Brügger, who won the World Cinema Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival for Red Chapel, takes the full-on Sacha Baron Cohen approach. The comedy and entertainment value of The Ambassador comes from the fact that Brügger isn’t just portraying a European diplomat, he’s portraying a caricature of a European diplomat. He looks like a dorky white guy dressed up as the rapper Pitbull for Halloween, and throughout the film he sports a variety of tobacco products, never seen without his silly cigarette holder, or awkwardly smoking a cigar or a pipe.

But as funny as Brügger is, and as fascinating as it is to see so intimately behind this curtain of corruption, it eventually becomes clear that The Ambassador is a film in pursuit of a narrative. While there is editing and artistry involved, crafting a truly brilliant documentary out contemporaneous events is mostly left to the fates. How can a filmmaker know if ‘life’ will provide a satisfying Hollywood ending when embarking on a production? This, of course, is the reason why reality TV is about 40% reality (and that’s a kind estimate). I’m happy Brügger didn’t try to fake anything monumental just to give the film a story, but at the end of the day The Ambassador isn’t a Rolling Stone article or 60 Minutes piece, it is a movie. And it is a movie intentionally presenting itself as entertainment. As an experiment in gonzo journalism, it proves a fun romp, but after a flashy and thrilling beginning, the film ends with a small thud. Brügger couldn’t control that, and pushing things further could have gotten him killed or arrested. But this is where some more astute filmmaking could have come in handy. Though Brügger speaks freely with us in narration, explaining that he is a journalist, as far as what we see on camera the movie plays out almost entirely straight, like Borat. But Borat was a prank on the American people. If that’s all
The Ambassador is, then there is little reason to watch — it isn’t exactly knee-slappingly hilarious to see a poor Pygmy tribe duped into thinking they’ll be employed in a matchstick factory. Brügger has more on his mind than that. So I’m not entirely sure why we, the audience, are kept at arms length. The real story here is Brügger making the movie, not the movie itself. We never see him drop his consul character, or work on his schemes with his crew — there is a white translator that we repeatedly see in the film, but I never gleaned if she was in on the gag or not. This approach possibly could have been an advantage if the film had more of a through-line narrative.

Danish journalist Mads Brügger goes undercover as a European Ambassador to embark on a dangerous yet hysterical journey to uncover the blood diamond trade in Africa.

An enigmatic and decadent white diplomat arrives in central Africa sporting dark glasses, riding boots, and a cigarette holder. He has recently bought an ambassadorship and claims to be a do-good rich businessman spearheading a diplomatic mission. Officially, he is there to start a factory that will employ locals to produce matches. Unofficially, he has really come to gain access to the area’s vast reserves of diamonds. It soon becomes apparent that, in this postcolonial economy, nearly everyone is out to rip off everyone else, and the dangers become all too real.

Mads Brügger returns to the Sundance Film Festival (The Red Chapel won the World Cinema documentary Jury Prize in 2010) with yet another brilliant example of gonzo filmmaking. Armed with a diplomatic passport, a hidden camera, and his razor-sharp wit, he risks life and limb to uncover deep-rooted corruption that allows others to continue to get rich from Africa’s resources. The Ambassador is a genre-breaking tragicomedy that establishes Brügger as a singular voice in the documentary world.

This is a breakout film for Andrea Riseborough. Forged by indoctrination and tragedy, Colette is not the most accessible character, but Riseborough manages to show glimpses of humanity underneath a cold veneer and she effortless conveys the fear of someone forced into duality. Clive Owen is mostly relegated to bureaucratic activities in Shadow Dancer but he brings a fiery conviction to his role that elevates his desk-bound scenes from becoming banal.

Colette’s IRA compatriots are always (purposefully) kept on the periphery. It keeps us on our toes as we don’t know the characteristics (or more importantly, the capabilities) of these men. They are inhabited by great actors like Aiden Gillen (The Wire) and David Wilmot (The Guard) who are extremely effective despite having limited screentime.

As with any great documentary, questions of truthful representation arise frequently throughout The Ambassador and a frustratingly brief conclusion is the film’s most notable flaw. The impression that the film itself is hiding something from the viewer becomes all too clear, which will again irritate some audiences. I found it in line with the Gonzo nature of the whole enterprise and those willing to do further research on the film will only come across a rabbit hole of accusations and denials.

With his extravagant, highly cliché posturing and seemingly opening filming his business/political journey Brügger sets out to expose the corruption on both sides of the 1st world / 3rd world equation and do so in as highly entertaining a fashion as possible. The quite excellent framing of various hidden cameras in compromising meetings suggest to the skeptical (including me) that manipulation of the film-making is not insignificant here. It is noteworthy that Lars Von Trier's Zentropa company is the chief backer here, too. But since I do rather like being manipulated by (in the right hands such as Mr. von Trier's) I find this particular mash-up of humour, journalism, and ethics-busting cliche-transcending politics to be daring, and in no way whatsoever, trite.
