Movie Review (Synopsis):

Starring Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoë Saldana, the layered romantic drama The Words follows young writer Rory Jansen who finally achieves long sought after literary success after publishing the next great American novel. There's only one catch - he didn't write it. As the past comes back to haunt him and his literary star continues to rise, Jansen is forced to confront the steep price that must be paid for stealing another man's work, and for placing ambition and success above life's most fundamental three words.

Layered romantic drama The Words follows young writer Rory Jansen who finally achieves long sought after literary success after publishing the next great American novel. There's only one catch - he didn't write it. As the past comes back to haunt him and his literary star continues to rise, Jansen is forced to confront the steep price that must be paid for stealing another man's work, and for placing ambition and success above life's most fundamental three words.

In this, Bradley Cooper  as a frustrated writer who stumbles upon a long-lost manuscript and publishes it as his own, earning raves as the literary world's next big thing. And, as part of our continuing, week-long look at the movies we're excited about this fall, MTV News had gotten its hand on an exclusive clip from the literary thriller.

The beautiful Zoe Saldana  plays Cooper's love interest in the film, and let's just say she's more distraction than muse as the writer attempts to put the finishing touches on "his" manuscript. (But really, who could blame her?

That duo’s philosophical interests may have ultimately exceeded their grasp on coherent storytelling with the TRON sequel, but Klugman and Sternthal remain as ambitious as ever with their new writing/directing effort: The Words, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

The Words tells the tale of Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), a struggling writer who eventually achieves the success he so desperately wants – by taking credit for another author’s manuscript, which was written many years before. However, Rory’s guilty conscience eventually begins to affect him in unexpected ways.
Rounding out the cast are such big-names as Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, Dennis Quaid, J.K. Simmons and Jeremy Irons as a mysterious elderly figure. The film’s supporting cast also includes a handful of recognizable faces, including Ben Barnes (Chronicles of Narnia) and John Hannah

The Words‘ central narrative concerns the couple played by Cooper and Saldana – juxtaposed against flashbacks to the experiences of Barnes’ writer character, in the past – and filled out with an additional subplot involving Quaid and Wilde, which eventually overlaps with the primary storyline.

Certainly, THE WORDS is an ambitious film. The bold framing device (or pretentious depending on who you ask) involves a public reading by an older writer, played by Dennis Quaid, attended by an amorous English Lit major (Olivia Wilde) who listens as he reads his new novel, which is the Cooper/Saldana part of the film. From there the focus shifts to the “A-story” which involves Cooper struggling with his guilt over stealing another man’s book. Once he’s approached by Irons, the film shifts into yet another flashback, where Irons tells Copper about his youth (where he’s played by Barnes) which led to him writing the book Copper is now passing off as his own. So basically, it’s a story, within a story, within a story.

As it stands though, THE WORDS is still a very good film, although not the masterpiece that ten years of effort might have warranted. At ninety minutes, the film feels a little brief, especially with it containing three stories. Still, it’s very enjoyable. The film takes place in New York and Paris, but was completely shot in my home town of Montreal- although the location is hidden fairly well (save for a few exteriors which will be a little too familiar to any Montreal native). The score by Marcelo Zarvos is particularly striking, with it being highly reminiscent of the kind of scores John Barry used to compose for films like OUT OF AFRICA. It’s lush, romantic, and compliments the action beautifully, particularly in the Paris/Barnes section.

Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become. In their directorial debut, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal have crafted a subtle tale that examines how overwhelming desire can lead to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Bolstered by a strong cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons, The Words adeptly assembles multiple narratives that reveal how one man's lost legacy holds the life of another man captiv.
