Movie Review (Synopsis):

Selected as the opening night film for Sundance 2012, "Hello I Must Be Going" features acclaimed actress Melanie Lynskey ("Win Win", "Up in the Air", Two and a Half Man") in her breakout role as Amy, a recent divorcee who seeks refuge in the suburban Connecticut home of her parents (Blythe Danner and John Rubinstein). Demoralized and uncertain of her future, Amy begins an affair with a 19-year-old actor ("Girls"' Christopher Abbott) that jumpstarts her passion for life and helps her discover an independence and sense of purpose that she has missed for years.

Coupling Danner's subtle, moving performance as a frustrated empty nester with Lynskey's endearing and nuanced depiction of both the comic and tragic coming together at a crossroads, "Hello I Must Be Going" is a modern, unconventional love story infused with sex, humor, and emotional honesty - everything Amy will need to get on in life.

Hello, I Must Be Going as one of its opening night films, putting it in the company of numerous films that have gone on to become critical and commercial darlings. The likes of In Bruges (2008), Happy Endings (2004) and Project Nim (2011), just to name a few. Needless to say, you don’t get chosen by Sundance to open the festival if your film is terrible. So that bodes well for this story of a recently divorced woman (Melanie Lynskey) and her rediscovery of her sense of purpose via her affair with a 19-year old boy. Directed by Todd Louiso (yes, the one from High Fidelity), Hello, I Must Be Going has a lot of great buzz coming out of the festival toward its release in September.

Divorced thirtysomething Amy (Melanie Lynskey) lives in her mother's (Blythe Danner) big fancy house in Hello I Must Be Going, where she's spent three months of soul-searching before hitting rock bottom in the trailer. It's not all bad though because she strikes up a romance with the 19-year-old boy next door, played by Girls ' Christopher Abbott (who gets to be much sexier here than as Marnie's ex). It would probably be an ego boost if his friends didn't assume she was someone's mom.

Divorced and demoralized Amy Minsky's prospects look bleak when she is condemned to move back in with her parents at the age of 35. Everyone wants to help, but, as her patience level with advice is plummeting, a bold teenage boy enters her life, igniting her last bit of self-esteem. What ensues is an unconventional love story infused with all the good things Amy needs to get on in life, and that just may include great sex. Todd Louiso and screenwriter Sarah Koskoff tread new ground with a modern agenda and infectious optimism. They gently seduce us into a relationship dilemma that far exceeds age difference. The two lead actorsâ??Melanie Lynskey and Christopher Abbottâ??are bursting with talent, ensuring that their situation is believable and compelling us to root for them. Hello I Must Be Going is fresh and original, proving what we so easily forget: the best medicine for most of the discomforts in life is the power of human connection

Making things more complicated: Their families know each other, and their dads are business associates. Watch the trailer to realize that you don’t know awkward until you’re referred to as a “Mom” by your new guy’s  friends.

Of the film, Oscilloscope says, “Todd has made the sort of smart, sophisticated, and charming film that we don’t see nearly enough of these days.  Melanie Lynskey is a revelation in the lead role, delivering an incredibly insightful and layered performance that is at the heart of the movie, making Amy both an endearing and honest character.  With its generous humanity and seamless blending of comedy and drama, the movie is reminiscent of classics from directors like Billy Wilder and James L. Brooks, yet it has a distinct and modern sensibility all its own.  We loved it from the moment we saw it at Sundance, and we are thrilled to be working with this great filmmaking team to bring it out into the world.”
