Using Thermometers to Cook the Perfect Meat

Posted by thermometers on February 19th, 2013

Do you remember seeing your mom or grandmother in the kitchen roasting a lovely cut of meat? Some of the fondest family memories people have been those involved with food. Turkey, ham, roasts- all are delicious when prepared the right way. However, these types of meat can quickly turn into dry, inedible disasters if they are overcooked. One way to prevent this from happening is to use a meat thermometer.

A meat thermometer is used to take the guesswork out of cooking. Instead of having to cut into a roast or turkey to see if it is finished, a meat thermometer will let you know for sure. One reason some people are hesitant to get meat thermometers is because they think they can cook meat without one. They cite the examples of their mothers and grandmothers who always made the perfect turkeys. They may be a little nostalgic. However, there were at least a few times when the turkey didn’t taste all that great. Maybe it was too dry or maybe it wasn’t cooked all the way through and had to be cut apart to finish cooking. Both of these issues could have been eliminated with a cooking thermometer.

There are several different types of meat thermometers available. Oven-proof digital thermometers are a good option to use when cooking a large cut of meat. The probe is placed in the meat before it goes into the oven. This type of thermometer stays inside the meat while it cooks. The probe goes into the meat and then into the oven, while the reader stays outside of the oven. This eliminates the need to open the oven door to check the temperature.

Then, there are traditional thermometers. Pop-up thermometers are usually found in large fowl like turkey, but they can also be purchased for other types of meat. The problem with relying on these types of thermometers is that they rely on the meat getting to a certain temperature before they pop. By this time, the meat is often dried out.

Using a digital thermometer is a great way to make sure that every cut of meat turns out just right. With a digital thermometer, your meat cooks to perfection.
