Greece?s Most Beautiful Islands ?Chania

Posted by Cretarent on June 13th, 2013

The islands of Greece are indeed very beautiful as can be deduced from the number of visiting foreign tourists, mostly from European countries, of course. Chania is one such beautiful place in the Crete island and also has an international airport.

Escape Into Awesomeness
Chania enjoys typical Mediterranean weather with sunny summers and rainy winters. As with most cities of Europe, Chania also enjoys an illustrious history, beginning with the Neolithic era. Through the developments in history, the most significant impact on the city’s growth and background as it is today has been the Venetian Era. Chania saw further changes during the Ottoman Era and the World War II periods.

Finally after the island regions were unified with Greece in the early 20th Century, the city became more cosmopolitan and flourishing, regaining its role as the crossroad of civilizations, influenced by Europe as well as by the East. Many important buildings were built during this era, intellectual and artistic societies were created and a new class of local aristocracy brought a different atmosphere to the everyday life of the town.

Unlike the mainland Greece that is going through a horrifying economic crisis in recent times, the island region of Crete and Chania have escaped its effect since their local economy depends on horticulture and production of fast selling goods like Olive Oil.

Chania – A Must Visit Heaven On Earth
Chania, like many European cities has an old town and a modern area of the city as well. Some of the fortification of the city built in 1538 has still managed to survive. Small lanes and old town charm make the atmosphere romantic for the tourists. The main square of the Old Town is called the Eleftherios Venizelos Square. It is the heart of the touristic activities in the area. And the harbour and the seafront complete the picture of the island.

There are several modern era buildings which serve as landmarks finely interspersed with the old buildings never failing to impress the visitors. There are also several museums, theatre groups etc. announcing the rich cultural heritage of the islands.

Agriculture and tourism are the two major revenue sources for the people of Chania. Agrotourism and ecotourism are new concepts the residents have developed of late to attract visitors from all over the world.

As already mentioned the city is served by Chania International Airport operating several flights a day including charter flights from many European cities. If you are travelling to Chania, it is better to approach a local rent a car in Chania for your travel needs in advance. Last minute arrangements could prove expensive.
