A study conducted at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston showed that smokers who used scheduled, gradual reduction were twice as successful as those who tried to quit cold turkey. Furthermore, a study conducted by the Hazelden Foundation showed that gradual reduction is most smokers' preferred method of quitting.

Gradual reduction techniques for smoking cessation are not new. For the past 30 years, funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, researchers at PICS, have developed and refined these techniques. The culmination of this research is QuitKey; a computerized self-help program based on behavior modification. QuitKey administers a personalized schedule for quitting based on each smoker's unique tobacco habit. The tiny hand-held computer collects information about cigarette consumption and then over a 2-4 week period gradually increases the time interval between cigarettes until the smoker quits.
