Teaching Your Child about Skiing

If you are a fan of skiing, you want your kids to love it too. Maybe you have always dreamed about hitting the slopes together as family. The good news is that it is possible to go out and enjoy skiing holidays as a family even when your children are very young. Following are some things to remember when introducing your children to skiing.

You may be concerned about the age of your children. You might think that they are too young to learn to ski but you might be surprised at what they can do even when they are very young. It’s pretty common for toddlers as young as 18 months to be able to bumble around on skis or snowshoes, though when they get a little older they are better able to handle themselves on skis. As long as your child is able to stand steadily, he or she can get on skis on flat terrain to start seeing what it feels like to have skis on.

What you can’t expect is for your very young child to get on a pair of skis and right away be hitting the big slopes. It will take a lot of patience on your part to start with a very young child or toddler. If you start with a toddler who is around the age of 18 months, you must remember to start slowly. Children this age are still getting used to the idea of walking around on their two feet instead of crawling. Their motor skills are still developing and it will take some time for them to get coordinated.

The great thing about introducing your child to skiing when he or she is still young is the fact that he or she won’t know to be scared yet, so they can often learn how much fun skiing is instead of being afraid of it.

If your child is four to five years old, you can en-roll him in a ski school. If he expresses interest in skiing and likes being outside in the snow, this may be a way to improve his skills so he is ready to hit the slopes on family skiing holidays.
