Save money on a prom dress

The prom is a memorable event in the life of a high school student. It represents the celebration of high school years and takes place near the end of the senior year. The overall cost that a family having a teenager completing high school has to cover is around $1000. This amount is very much influenced by the outfit the teenager selects.

When it comes to boys, things are simpler, they choose a formal wear, buy a pair of elegant shoes, a good perfume to complement their look and they are ready to go. When it is about girls, however, things reach cosmogonic dimensions. A girl preparing for a prom needs a prom dress, belt, jewelry, purse, makeup, hairdo, and many, many other things.

This makes parents of teenage girls spend more on a prom than parents of teenage boys. To reduce their expenses, parents might think that by considering short prom dresses they could spend less. But considering that short prom dresses are still prom dresses, thus expensive, parents would not manage to save a cent.

To save money on a prom dress, parents need to try another approach. The first one is to search through the existing dresses their daughter has and that were never worn before. For a girl at this age, wearing an already worn dress is something that should never happen. If the girl refuses nicely to wear a dress that she has in the wardrobe, proceed to the next step.

Try to transform an existing dress and make it lovelier. There are many seamstresses and tailors that can dye dresses and transform them into something completely new. The disadvantage in this case is that this operation could cost you about the same amount of money that you would pay for purchasing a new dress.

To keep your expenses low, it is preferable to transform the dress yourself, by changing its neckline or length, by adorning it with several sequins or, on the contrary, by simplifying it and eliminating its crystals and pearls. If you are not that good at handmaking things, consider the next tip.

If the girl does not want to wear a dress that she already has in her wardrobe, maybe she would be willing to wear a dress that one of her friends has. Advise her to check the dresses that her friends have and maybe they could switch some of them. For this method to be successful, the other girls have to be receptive to the idea, too.

If the aforementioned strategy does not pay off, take your daughter and start visiting thrift shops that can provide customers with anything from souvenirs and paintings to clothing and furniture. Generally, in this kind of shops, one can find garments that were released a year ago or so, or that are created by unknown designers and that obviously benefit from lower prices.
