Da Nang Train Station Introduction

North-to-South Railway Route running through Da Nang City is about 30 km in length with 4 train stations of Thanh Khe, Kim Lien, Hai Van Nam, and Da Nang Vietnam Train Station. Besides many North-to-South trains, Da Nang Train Station also has local trains to meet a huge number of passengers’ demands among such provinces, for example, Da Nang - Hue, Da Nang - Nha Trang, Da Nang -  Vinh, Da Nang – Quang Binh, Da Nang – Ho Chi Minh City and so on.

1. Historical hallmark of Da Nang Train Station

With the decree on December 25, 1898, the French people opened government bonds that attracted 200 million francs to implement the project of building the railway section of Nha Trang – Da Nang – Quang Tri. In 1906, the Da Nang train station to Hue route was completed with the extraordinary success of passing through Hai Van Pass and reaching Dong Ha (Quang Tri) in 1908.

With the decree on February 22, 1931, the French people deployed the construction of a 532 km railway section from Da Nang train station to Nha Trang which was started in November 1931. This is the last section of the trans-Vietnam railway completed in October 1936.

Being listed in the trans-Vietnam railway system, the main station of Da Nang Train Station (Gare de Tourane central) was built in 1905 in the middle of Da Nang city center (Laurie Street, this house was destroyed by Dong Minh Bomb in 1944). As the main station was located too far from the warehouse, along with the pressure from the bourgeois owner, the city government had built an additional station of the bank of Han River. It had spacious parking lots and convenient warehouses for the goods transshipment from Tien Sa Port to the left side of Han River. This station has been called Han Market Station (Gare de Tourane Marché) which used to carry passengers since 1943.

At the beginning of this century, although Hoi An has declined and Da Nang has still developed, the relationship between the two cities is still very tight. The need for communication requires the need to overcome the situation of Co Co River was filled which has caused difficulty in traveling. A longer stretch of Vinh Dien Canal dug by the locals connecting two towns could not be replaced. At that time, the colonial government had launched a project to build a railway from Tien Sa Port to carry cargo directly to Hoi An along such sandy slopes and Ngu Hanh Son Mountain.

On October 9, 1905, trains with Decauville style was opened with 5 stops and 3 times per day. However, due to the decline of Hoi An and the rise of Da Nang, the transport demand between the two cities is also decreasing. Additionally, the situation of being buried by wind and sand made the operation of Da Nang train station to Hoi An route more difficult and less efficient. By a storm in 1916, this route was completely paralyzed. Facing this situation, Envoy Trung Ky issued a decree allowing the sale of the remaining equipment of this railway line in 1917.
