Try Blackout Shades for total darkness

Blackout curtains can block up to 99% of all light from passing through the window. They are perfect curtains for bedrooms, home theaters and photographic development, to name a few functions. They even provide moderate insulation against heat, drafts, and cold entering through the glass. They are resistant to dust, stains, should not be permanent features, and are easy to install and remove. The hardware for some blackout curtains is as simple as using strips of tape to secure the curtains to the window frame. These can be hung up and removed in seconds.

The most permanent shades are blackout roman shades. These are made so that they can be opened sometimes and closed when necessary to block light. They slide on rails that fit tightly to the window frame so that no light enters when closed. The rails can be installed inside the window frame to be hidden from view.

The screen cannot block all light, especially when mounted with an inner rail. This is the follow-up style used in most blackout Roman shades. Light will continue to enter the top and bottom even though the inner bracket blocks full light on the sides. Still, the amount that arrives will be imperceptible. An outside bracket can let in some light, but it can cover more of the window. Any light that passes through will appear as a glare and will still be weak enough not to disturb anything. Adding some other window treatment like a valance will remove all the light that leaks out.

If you are considering blackout solar shades, keep in mind that they are more for shading than removing light. They are usually made in a honeycomb shape and require a coating to block out all light. With the coatings there is no difference in quality between them and other opaque shades.
