Geekbench vs New MacBook M1 Chip – How Faster It Is?

Posted by Misty on December 14th, 2020

The first MacBook and Mac Mini models with the Apple M1-soc are now available. But it will not stop there. Apple is coming with a range of new chips for future MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro models.

Chip engineers at the Cupertino, California-based technology giant are working on several successors to the ‌M1‌ chip. If they meet expectations, they will significantly exceed the performance of the latest machines with Intel chips. According to people familiar with the case who asked not to be named because the plans are not yet public”.

Geekbench Performance Report

As the first MacBook with the new, proprietary Apple chip M1 has been put to the rack. In the well-known Geekbench test, the M1 scores better than all other MacBooks, including considerably more expensive models.

The company mentioned significant increases in performance: 2 to 3.5 times faster than direct predecessors with Intel chip. How fast the new MacBooks and Mac mini are in practice remains to be seen. But an initial performance test shows that the Apple M1 chip is indeed very fast.

In the well-known Cross-Platform Benchmark test, processors are rated for how quickly they can accomplish tasks with both one processor core and multiple cores - the higher the better.

The MacBook Air with M1 chip scores very well in Geek bench. The laptop has a single-core score of 1687 and a multi-core score of 7433.

High score

The new Air's score is higher than any other MacBook out there. Including the much more expensive MacBook Pro 16 inch with 8-core Intel Core i9 processor. That laptop scores 1096 and 6870 points respectively, and costs 3199 dollars. The MacBook Air with M1 chip is available from more than 1129 dollars. Too expensive? Yes it is, but if you already have a MacBook, then you can easily sell your laptop online for a very reasonable price. The M1 chip's single-core score is also higher than any other processor tested with Geekbench.

Apple's M1 chip even outperforms some recent iMacs, which are normally more powerful due to better cooling. The MacBook Air doesn't even have a fan. The multi-core score of the M1 chip even comes close to the entry-level model of the Mac Pro. The most expensive and most powerful computer that Apple sells from 6,499 dollars.

Faster chips will follow

An important side note about tests such as Geekbench is that they say nothing about the performance of the chip. The score mainly says something about the peak performance of the processor. This reduces as soon as the chip gets too hot.

The M1 chip is the first Mac chip to be released by Apple. It is in the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13-inch and Mac mini. The other computers in Apple's range are still supplied with Intel chips, but will also be switched to Apple chips in the near future. They are probably even faster than the M1 chip.
