More than thousands of citizens have less money in their pockets in Corona times, yet a quarter of those surveyed spend more money on food than before. In Singapore since the outbreak of COVID-19, 11 percent of those surveyed have found discount products, 9 percent more bulk packs and 12 percent more private labels in their shopping cart.

At the same time, the online grocery shopping survey by the Oliver Weymann consultancy revealed that 21 percent of those surveyed today mainly bought in a store that they had not bought in a few months ago. At the same time, grocery retailers are confronted with fewer visits and significantly larger purchases per consumer: half of all respondents stated that they shop for groceries less often.

E-food is gaining in importance, but revealing its limits: According to the survey, six percent of consumers in Singapore have switched to online grocery shopping, at least temporarily. 12 percent said they had bought groceries online before the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, the online customers surveyed said that a lack of product availability (67 percent) and limited delivery windows (38 percent) have led to lower spending. “We assume that supply is currently the limiting factor and not demand. The longer the acute crisis lasts, the more the capacities will be adjusted.

14 percent of the consumers surveyed in Singapore currently state that the COVID-19 crisis will change their shopping behavior for more than 12 months. Another 36 percent expect at least five months. Customers expect the biggest changes in the preparation of their meals: 38 percent of those surveyed plan to buy more local food in the future. 32 percent said they wanted to cook more of their food at home.
