What is a flange?

A flange is a metal disc used to join pipes. A super duplex steel gasket is fixed between the 2 flanges to tighten up the seal. A flange is utilized to connect two pipelines or valves or tubes to form a piping network. They offer support and strength and avoid leakage.

Commonly welded or screwed into pipelines or valves, bolts attach flanges together. Flanges provide easy access to tidy or inspect a piping system.

Made of numerous metals - Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel, etc., these flanges vary in 'pressure class'.

Every flange is classified under a pressure class, depending on the capacity of the flange to endure a particular amount of temperature. Also, the type of metal used in identify how much pressure it can endure.

So it can be presumed that various flanges can hold up against various temperature levels (or pressures.) If the temperature increases, the pressure rating of the flange decreases and vice versa.

What is an Orifice flange?

Orifice flanges are disc-shaped flanges which include one of the three flanges namely Slip-on, Threaded and Weld neck.

Main purpose:

Orifice flange is a device having welding ends, which allows it to hold an orifice plate intact.

Extensively utilized with orifice meters, they determine the flow rate of either liquid or gases, that flow through the pipe. The Orifice Flowmeter includes a thin Orifice plate, clamped into orifice flanges.

An orifice plate, which is the gadget to measure the movement of the inner fluid or gas, is secured between 2 orifice flanges, which are connected to the pipe. The orifice plate contains a little hole; with 2 pressure tap holes are drilled in each flange which helps in measuring the pressure developed inside the pipeline.

A 'jack screw' fitted between the two flanges, it allows to separate the flanges throughout evaluation or replacement procedure.

Use:

Industries where Orifice flange is utilized -

Heavy and light chemicals

Steel

Paper

Nuclear

Petrochemicals

Sewage treatment

Water treatment and distribution

Power Generation

Oil production and refining

Gas Processing and transmission

Chemicals

Hence, these flanges play a necessary role during the upkeep period of the piping system. They are the best fit for intricate pipeline networks.
