5 Expert Winter Lawncare Tips

Posted by Greenworks Tools on December 19th, 2020

You may be tempted to ignore your lawn during the winter. It’s a time when there are no leaves left on the trees, and you don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn. There are still some steps you can take to ensure your lawn is ready for spring and keep it looking in top shape. Here are some tips, from fertilizing and aerating your lawn to maintaining your cordless lawn mower and other equipment, for taking care of your lawn during winter.

Fertilize

The winter is the perfect time to use a winterizing fertilizer. It absorbs into the soil slower. Be careful in following the directions on the package, as putting too much fertilizer on could burn the lawn. Using a fertilizer that isn’t winterized is possible, but you want to make sure the lawn is not hard, and snow isn’t expected. If you fertilize your lawn when the ground is frozen, the fertilizer will just wash away.

Aerate

As long as the ground is not frozen, you can aerate your lawn. It’s better to use the plug-type aeration, which will pull plugs of soil and nutrients out of the ground and deposit them on top of the grass. Then, the next time it rains or snows, the nutrients from the plugs will be redistributed into the ground, helping to keep the grass healthy during the winter.

Lower Your Lawn Mower

You will probably get one or two mows in before winter really hits its stride and the snow starts falling. While your lawn will start to slow down its growth, you will still want to lower your lawn mower and keep the grass fairly low. Too low, and it could hurt the grass. Too high, though, and it could serve to compact the top layer of the lawn under snow, also hurting the grass. Leaving the grass shorter also helps protect against rodents and mold. Generally, you want to keep your grass between 1 and 2 inches long in the winter.

Be Careful with Salt

While salt is a great way to clear away snow from your driveway, but the salt or other ice melt solution can get into your lawn. This can damage your lawn. Salt prevents nutrients from soaking into the lawn, creating bald spots. Be careful when shoveling snow, as well, as it may still have salt in it.

Check Your Equipment

Cordless lawn mowers don’t often need maintenance, but this is the perfect time to ensure everything is running smoothly. For example, you can sharpen the blades. Take a look at your equipment and make sure it is all running well and well-maintained.
