What are the Pros and Cons of Breast Reduction Surgery?

Posted by Dr Rajat Gupta on December 19th, 2020

Breast reduction surgery or mammoplasty is increasingly popular among men and women all over the world. Alongside its sister surgeries breast lift and breast augmentation, breast reduction has also significantly progressed, producing excellent results.

The reason for this popularity and progress brings us to the first pro.

Pro #1: Boosting Your Confidence

For women, huge breasts have both health implications as well as they cause unwanted attention. Women with large breasts feel very self-conscious and this, along with the weight of their breasts, weigh them down. Similarly, Gynecomastia can make men very embarrassed and awkward about themselves. Breast reduction or Gynecomastia treatment solves this problem.

However, this boost is only possible if you have an expert board-certified surgeon, which brings us to the first con.

Con #1: Possibly Unnatural Results

If your surgeon feels that liposuction is all they need to reduce your breast size, they are wrong. Contrary to popular belief, heavy breasts are caused by excess breast tissue. This tissue needs to be removed and reshaped. Only then so the results look natural and aesthetic.

Using only liposuction results in breasts that look like deflated balloons.

Pro #2: Completely Painless Procedure

Often, mammoplasty is combined with a breast lift or mastopexy. This involves reorienting the nipple and areola to point upwards. This creates youthful and perky results.

Since this is all performed under anaesthesia, the patient feels no pain during the procedure or afterwards. There may be slight discomfort and tightness in the chest. But this is easily managed with painkillers.

Con #2: Incision Scars

The tissue is removed via an incision. Generally, this is made around the areola and extends a little way down. This is the short scar technique. Although the incision marks will fade a lot over time, the scar will always be faintly visible.

Pro #3: Short-Scar Technique

The short-scar technique produces the most natural-looking results. It also speeds up recovery since there is less healing to do. This makes the post-op experience much more comfortable.

Therefore, what may seem like a con actually turns out to be a pro!

Con #3: Possible Complications

As with any surgery, there is always the possibility of complications. That said, the advancement of plastic surgery makes mammoplasty one of the safest procedures out there.

Especially when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, at a well-equipped centre, you get excellent results that defy all expectation!
