Artificial grass is a durable surface of synthetic fibers created to resemble natural grass. It's most frequently used in athletic arenas for outdoor sports either originally designed or are commonly played on now. But it's also increasingly being used on commercial and residential applications, even for homes. In these cases, the artificial grass isn't really meant to be seen as grass but instead as a decorative enhancement to a home's landscaping. For many homeowners, the appeal of this type of turf lies not in the fact that it's artificial, but in the fact that it can provide a low maintenance solution to an otherwise unsightly lawn.

Artificial turf has come a long way since its inception from the early 1900s. Back then, most was created with rubber but later advancements included nylon and later fibers like nylon/spandex. In the mid-1990s, a new synthetic fiber came onto the market and that was tuft binding. Tuft binding involves the use of a combination of heat and pressure that binds tufts of fiber together. This is the most common type of artificial grass found in North America today and is generally made from polyethylene fibers, although other materials such as glass can be used as well.

Another major advancement in synthetic grass landscape installations is the implementation of blades that can replicate the appearance of natural grass blades. There are two types of blades: flat blades and low profile blades. Flat blades don't have a "base" of gravel beneath them, which gives them more of an imitation feel than low profile blades. In other words, flat blades don't have any real grassy underneath the blades. The only way to tell the difference between flat and low profile blades is by looking at the edge of the blade as it grows.

Both flat and low profile blades have seams running down the complete length of the blade to simulate walking on the surface. To make artificial turf look more realistic and provide an even more authentic look and feel to your yard, home owners will want to consider purchasing infill. Infill is essentially the top layer of soil that is added to the top layer of blades so you have a completely natural looking surface. Home owners can purchase either the black plastic type of infill or they can choose from a variety of natural-looking types of infill. You should keep in mind that there is quite a bit of variation in the color and texture of infill so it's best to experiment with the colors and textures to find what works best for you.

If you're looking for a low maintenance type of landscape, then a simple solution may be to select a material such as gravel or sand. These materials will not require constant replacement and repaving, saving you a lot of money in the long run. If you do decide to use artificial grass in large amounts, then you will want to select materials that are durable against the different weather conditions, such as rain, sleet, snow, and hail. The biggest threats to natural grass are heavy rains and excessive snow and hail so if you live in an area with heavy rainfall or snow fall, then this may be something that you definitely want to consider.

Many homeowners have tried installing artificial grass themselves but many find that the installation process is very difficult and usually requires professional help. Homeowners may also find that the difficulty level increases greatly if they choose to install their turf fibers using non-native or inferior materials. For these reasons, when considering installing artificial grass, many homeowners choose to use native materials that are durable and long lasting so they can enjoy their beautiful lawns for many years to come.
