New Drug in Small Cell Lung Cancer Treatment

Posted by Cancer Center Las Colinas on December 21st, 2020

There has been a significant advancement in the treatment of lung cancer this year. At the foremost is the development of osimertinib. This drug has proven to be so successful at the trial stage that its clinical trials were discontinued to allow the larger population to access it. It is sold under the brand name Tagrisso which is available in tablet form.

Osimertinib has been effectively used to treat cancer that has already spread to other organs in the body. It has worked for patients with EGFR, which is a gene that causes abnormal epidermal growth. It may also be given to patients whose EGFR inhibitor medication has stopped working. The EGFR gene appears in 15 percent of the cancer cases diagnosed, and it is reported more often in patients who do not smoke.

The clinical trial was followed closely by Dr. Burns, a thoracic oncologist working at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. He says that the drug was being used to prevent recurrence in patients diagnosed with lung cancer and tested +ve for the EGFR gene. It achieved a reduction of about 80 percent risk of recurrence.

The drug has also been observed to cause the following side effects:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Aching, swelling, or redness in the arm
  • Lightheadedness, or fainting
  • cough
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Constipation
  • Sudden headache
  • Slurred speech
  • Sudden loss of coordination
  • Back pain
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the arm or leg
  • Anxiety

The side effects may reduce or disappear as the treatment continues. However, should they persist, contact a doctor immediately.Any allergic reaction to the drug should also be reported, and care should be taken to ensure the dosage is taken as prescribed. The drug is expected to be permitted by the FDA in the next six months.
