Surgical lamps are used in the surgical theatre to illuminate a surgical field and minimize the chances of postoperative bleeding, general tissue damage, infection and other issues that can arise during surgery. A surgeon can switch on different lighting depending on the kind of surgery that is going to be performed. Surgical lamps are generally made up of several different components such as the surgical lamp body ring, the surgical ballast, the surgical headlight, the surgical torch and the surgical stem. All these different parts play an important role in making the surgical lamp and its supporting infrastructure fully functional.

Surgical lamps can be used for many purposes depending on their main function. Some of the main functions of surgical lamps are to increase the safety and eliminate confusion in the surgical theatre. It is very important for the surgeon to make the surgical field as clear and lighted as possible to reduce the risk of accidental injury or loss of blood. The illumination also allows the surgeons to perform their task with greater attention and alertness since they do not have to strain their eyes for seeing small objects. Surgical loupes or lights are also used to show the extent of retinal damage in the form of a colored index of light and shadow.
