The Island Shrine of Itsukushima The island of Miyajima is famous worldwide for being the Japanese Shrine Island, only a short ferry ride from mainland Hiroshima. Miyajima is best known as the house for the Itsukushima Shrine, the Shinto temple for the Princess' daughters of wind god Susano, occupying 30 square kilometers on Hiroshima Bay. The waters of a narrow lake, backed only by piles, render most of the shrine's houses from the eighth century. The high tide effect is astonishing and makes these structures – the iconic O-Torii Gate – look as though they are floating on the sea.
