Delusional Disorder: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatments

This mental disorder reduces a person's ability to think and understand. Many people sometimes get confused about many things without any reason, which is a common thing. But when it starts happening excessively and all the time, it takes the form of a mental disorder related to confusion. Which is also called 'depressive disorder' in the language of psychology. This mental disease can cause patient to go into depression.

This mental disorder is considered one of the more serious mental disorders. In this type of mental disorder, one's mind starts to get confused. In such a situation, the person himself does not even know that what he/she is feeling is all an illusion. He also hesitates to tell people about this confusion.

Types of Delusions

This mental condition is classified into different categories; including-

Persecutory: In this type, someone may feels that They are being spied on, cheated, being followed, being maligned or are being treated unfairly.

Grandiose: In this type of delusional disorder, people may feel that they have an special talent, ability or they have a relation with a celebrity or god

Somatic: People may feel that insects or bugs are crawling on their bodies.

Jealous: Victim may feel that their partners aren't royal to them.

Erotomanic: A person may think that a famous personality loves to him/her.

Mixed: In this type of delusions, symptoms are mixed.

Delusional Disorder Causes

There is a lot of skepticism among psychiatrists about the causes of this disorder as to what actually causes it. But there are some reasons that most psychiatrists agree to -

Heredity: This type of disorder is more commonly found in people whose parents or family members have had a mental disorder like schizophrenia.

Biological: In many researches, it has been found that mental disorders such as depressive disorder are not able to function properly in those parts of the brain which are related to understanding the thinking of the person.

Consumption of Drugs and Alcohol: For this disorder, the person being under a lot of stress is also considered an important reason. Excessive drug intake or excessive consumption of alcohol etc. can also occur. These things have a direct effect on the mind of the person, due to which stress and tension are more likely to cause such disorder.

Symptoms of Delusional Disorder:

In mental disorders like delusional disorder, a person exhibits two types of symptoms-

Symptoms Related to Nature: Due to this disorder, most changes are seen in the nature of a person. In such a situation, the person starts to become emotionally weak, reacts to the smallest thing too much. Such people are seen to be excessively angry and irritable in nature.

Symptoms Like Always Living in Confusion: As has been said that a person gets confused in a depressive disorder, due to which he/she starts living in more confusion than necessary. In such a situation, a person starts feeling things that are not even real.

Risk Factors:

There may be the following risk factors of this mental disorder -

  • Stress
  • Excessive use of alcohol and drugs
  • Smoking
  • People who live alone or spend more time in loneliness, people from outside, or who hear or see less, etc. are at a higher risk of getting delusional disorder disease

Diagnosis of Delusional Disorder:

If symptoms of such mental disorder are seen, the psychiatrist first examines the medical history of the person, along with physical examination of the victim. In addition to this, your doctor or psychiatrist may examine the person's blood. On the basis of which it is ensured that the victim is not getting this disorder due to any physical problem.

Treatment of Delusional Disorder:

When confirmed for a delusional disorder, the person's treatment is resorted to psychoactive drugs such as antidepressants, first-generation antipsychotics, atypical antipsychotics, tranquilizers and different types of therapy. Therapy mainly consists of in-person therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy.
