A sarcoma is a type of cancer that mainly affects the bones and soft tissues. They are highly aggressive and usually result in death within a year or so. The most common type is soft cell sarcoma, which accounts for 90% of all cases. Sarcomas are a rare type of cancer. This type of cancer usually develops in areas that have a high level of asbestos. Sarcomas can appear in both adults and children for as yet unknown reasons. In some cases, sarcoma has been associated with past exposure to asbestos, certain chemicals, or viral infections.

Sarcoma affects the bones, muscles, and soft tissue of the body. It usually develops slowly over a period of time in young adults. Sarcoma treatment may involve surgery (for example, to remove a tumor or some parts of it), chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these three treatments. It is particularly common to develop secondary sarcoma (which is caused by another, already present condition) from the medicines that are used to treat the primary tumor. However, this can sometimes be avoided by following a strict treatment plan.

The majority of patients with a case of this type of sarcoma can pass away without any noticeable side effects, some patients will develop a loss of sensation, paralysis, or permanent blindness.
