The Benefits Of Oxygen Therapy

The benefits of oxygen therapy is numerous, and more are being discovered every day. As science unravels the marvels of oxygen treatment, it is becoming a more popular form of medical treatment that is even being covered by medical aid programs in some cases.

The basic principle of oxygen treatment is to administer oxygen at higher than normal pressures to the body, resulting in an increased concentration of oxygen in the blood, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and brain, which promotes healing.

This can be done with the use of a hyperbaric chamber, and is called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or HBOT.

The benefits of HBOT

Although the use of HBOT therapy can benefit anyone by increasing oxygen in the body, resulting in improved brain function, increased energy and greater awareness, it is most often used for the treatment of specific diseases or injuries.

Hyperbaric medicine can be used to treat several medical conditions, and medical institutions use it in different ways. Medical professionals may recommend HBOT treatment if you have one of the following conditions:

Memory loss as a result of brain injury

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease

Severe anemia

Brain abscesses

Arterial gas embolism (bubbles in your blood)

Burns

Carbon monoxide poisoning

Crushing injuries

Sudden deafness

Decompression sickness

Gangrene

Infection of skin or bone that causes necrosis

Non-healing or slow healing wounds, such as a diabetic foot ulcer

Radiation injury

Skin graft or skin flap at risk of tissue death

Traumatic brain injury

Sudden and painless loss of vision

In addition to improving and in some cases completely healing many of these conditions, HBOT therapy is also very effective in helping professional athletes recover from training or injury. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and wound-healing accelerator that has the ability to help athletes recover from sports-related injuries. In these cases, HBOT is often recommended for:

Concussions

Head trauma

Memory loss

Anxiety

Lack of focus

Ligament tears

Muscle injuries or tears

Inflammation

Bruising

HBOT works by dramatically decreasing inflammation, improving vascular flow, increasing stem cell release and activation, regenerating bone and cartilage, and slowing the process of scar formation.

To this effect, many professional athletes are now incorporating HBOT into their recovery regimen to not only heal injuries, but to maintain peak condition, to increase focus and maximize their performance.

HBOT treatment – what to expect

Before your medical professional would recommend HBOT for any condition, a thorough check up and evaluation will need to be done to assess your condition and possible risk factors.

Treatment would involve several sessions in a hyperbaric chamber, which is quite comfortable these days. Throughout the session, which will last anywhere from 1-2 hours, and your health and response to ten treatment will be monitored the whole time.

Although you may experience several benefits immediately, such as increased clarity and energy, any improvement in healing or returned muscular or organ function will require several sessions.
