Oxygen therapy for memory loss

Memory loss has a severe effect not only on a person’s health and wellbeing, but also on their relationships with friends, family and even colleagues. In many cases, severe memory loss will result in the deterioration of a person’s whole life, loss of employment and possible permanent admission to a care facility.

Memory decline takes many forms and various memory loss diseases, metal illnesses and infections can result in memory loss. Dementia is a disorder which causes memory loss, loss of speech, changes in mood and behavior, difficulty communicating effectively and confusion.

In particular, vascular dementia is common among people who have had strokes and long histories of hypertension. It is also associated with mild head trauma from falls and athletic injuries to the brain.

Infectious diseases, such as Lyme disease and Zika can also cause dementia by damaging the small blood vessels and neurons throughout the brain.

Both of these cases of dementia and memory loss can be effectively treated using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

What is HBOT?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a specialized form of medical treatment administered by delivering 100% pure oxygen to the body through increased atmospheric pressure greater than 1.3 ATA in an enclosed hard chamber.

The result is increased blood flow throughout the brain and improved mental clarity, less fatigue, improved vision and increased awareness. In many cases it can improve and reverse the cognitive impairment associated with injuries to the brain, regardless of when the injury occurred.

When oxygen is administered at higher than normal pressures, the body can incorporate more oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid, and other bodily fluids which results in healing.

A recent study conducted in Israel fond that hyperbaric oxygen therapy improved brain function among people who had experienced memory deterioration as a result of a stroke and head injury decades earlier.

In addition, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also effective in maintaining healthy brain function and memory.

Risks of HBOT

Although the benefits are numerous, every form of treatment has its risks. There are certain risks associated with HBOT, and each person considering oxygen treatment for memory loss, should have a detailed check up and evaluation performed by a professional.

The incorrect or inappropriate use of HBOT can lead to a number of adverse effects that include pain or damage to ears, sinuses, eyes, teeth and lungs.

In some cases, patients may also experience anxiety, claustrophobia, increased blood pressure, low blood sugar, pulmonary edema and even a collapsed lung.

In rare cases oxygen toxicity or poisoning can occur resulting in convulsions and other complications. People should not undergo HBOT if they have recently had a cold or fever, or ear trauma. People with a history of tinnitus, middle ear infections, pressure intolerance or ear surgery may also be at risk.

In all cases it is vital to make sure that the the HBOT chambers used are approved by the FDA, as chambers that do not fulfill these requirements may struggle to maintain the right pressure for oxygen administration and in some cases cannot even guarantee the purity of the oxygen administered.
