When Thomas first tried out for a promotion at his new company, he ran away to get paid; this made John very angry. The next morning, the news of the skull brings Einlegesohlen to the hospital. He informs his superiors that he wants to know why the skull was placed there, since the patient does not have any grave illness. Undaunted, Einlegesohlen proceeds to research about the origin of skulls. In doing so, he comes to the conclusion that the skulls were used in the ancient times to scare away evil spirits.

De Munt and Roenneboe decide to dig up the rest of the graves, but this time they decide to use an einlegesohlen on the skull. This time, however, they get lucky; the skull has no rotten parts and even has a hole where its head should be. They decide to leave the skull in the earth and pray that Einlegesohlen will be able to use it again someday. Unfortunately, Einlegesohlen's son returns and finds the body.

When Sondheim finds out that Einlegesohlen is the father of the children that disappeared, he decides to free the townspeople and execute Einlegesohlen. However, the execution takes place while Einlegesohlen is inside his house, due to the presence of the einschatzmer, or witch-like beings that roam the area. As a punishment for his crimes, the local people try to poison Einlegesohlen. This way, all of the people in the town are forced to drink poisoned water until they pass out. When Sondheim realizes what's going on, he flies in to confront Einlegesohlen, but he's too late; the villagers have already died from the poison.
