Maintain good dental hygiene

Brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing daily are essential steps in keeping our teeth healthy and, therefore, whiter.

There will be less buildup of dental plaque and tartar, and therefore, dental surfaces will be less porous and have much less tendency to turn yellow.

Avoid or limit certain foods

It may not be surprising to some of you, but most people ignore it. The Dentist on Chinguacousy Rd tells you to limit foods with strong pigmentation like blueberries, blackberries, beets, certain spices like turmeric, etc.

I won't teach you anything either by telling you to stay away from cannabis and cigarettes, which are by far the biggest culprits of teeth stains, closely followed by coffee, tea, and red wine. However, we must not go crazy.

You can do these things daily:

Consume fatty foods

All fatty foods make dental surfaces more slippery and adhere less to the teeth. Ending your meal and snacks with cheese, nuts or yogurt is not a bad idea. You can also add milk to your tea or coffee.

Alternate with sips of water

When you drink wine or a colorful drink, try alternating your sips with water. This will rinse your mouth a bit and decrease the color. Besides, it will help neutralize the acidic PH of your drink which has many consequences for the mouth.

Drink through a straw

The Dentist on Chinguacousy suggests limiting the direct contact of food to your teeth, you decrease the chances of staining them.

Avoid excessively acidic foods and drinks

When we are used to ingesting a lot of acidic foods or drinks, this softens the enamel and creates dental erosion. This has the effect of reducing the thickness of your enamel and letting the dentine shows through, the dental layer just below which is yellow.

Brush your teeth with hydrogen peroxide and the baking soda

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate or “little cow”, has whitening properties without being too abrasive if we do not abuse it too much and exert light pressure on our toothbrush during brushing.

This product removes surface stains that have been created over time with the foods and substances mentioned above.

Here is an easy DIY that you can use a few times a week:

  1. Mix 1 tsp. Baking soda in 2 tsp. Water
  2. Use this homemade paste to brush your teeth as you would with regular toothpaste

You can also add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (3%) to produce a stronger oxygenating and antibacterial effect to better penetrate the tooth and reduce yellowing.

Prioritize the right shades of lipsticks (For Women's)

To help you cheat a bit, you can apply a lipstick that will create a contrast with your teeth and reduce the yellow of them.

Preferred colors

Red: Nothing better than this color to revive your mine and give you a fabulous look! It has the same effect on your teeth and neutralizes yellow with its red tone. Opt for those whose shade draws more on the blue than on the orange.

Rose:  Ahhh the pink! This color illuminates the complexion without altering the color of the teeth. Be careful though with lilac and fuchsia, which tend to draw the eye to small imperfections.

Nude:  Natural colors soften features and look good on just about anyone. As with red, choose more neutral and cool shades to counterbalance the yellow of the teeth.

Shades to avoid

Orange: All variations of this shade, whether coral or peach, do not contrast enough with the yellowish shade of the teeth.

Brown Same reasons as for orange tints; the chestnuts bring out the stains.

Purple: Derivatives of this shade, in addition to dulling the complexion, will also make your teeth appear instantly yellower.

Neons: These very pop colors draw attention to your mouth more than ever and, through an optical illusion effect, make everything around it appear darker - in this case, your teeth.

Recommended oral care product to use

  • Whitening strips
  • Whitening toothpaste
  • Whitening mouthwash

Non-recommended oral care Product

Rinse your mouth with apple cider vinegar

This homemade stuff is not very good for the teeth. This is because apple cider vinegar can cause enamel erosion if used too often and intensely. It's the last thing you want since enamel is what protects your teeth and makes them shiny. Moreover, this kind of practice makes the teeth sensitive. Why try to solve one problem this way if it is to create new ones?

Use strawberries or bite into a lemon and leave it in place for a few minutes

The acid in these fruits once again causes an acid attack on your teeth and increases the chances of you developing tooth decay and hypersensitivity.

Brush your teeth with activated charcoal

The famous fashion that started on social networks of brushing teeth with activated charcoal is not recommended by dental health professionals. In addition to not knowing its exact level of abrasiveness, which is undoubtedly high, this method damages the enamel and creates tooth sensitivity. Not to mention that it can potentially stain your bathroom sink.
