How to solve clogged drains

Posted by LauraDerb on January 1st, 2021

The plumbing system in your home is just as important as any other system. Unfortunately, this is the only system we seem to take for granted until it needs repair. The average Wilmington plumber gets more calls for repairs than for upgrades and routine maintenance. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it may not be good for your wallet. Drains are obviously important for the successful operation of your sinks, showers, dishwashers and even your washing machines. But what happens when they get damaged or clogged? Here are some tips for successful repair of the damage.

Wash the drains clean

Clogged and slow drains can be particularly annoying. Fortunately, the average person can remove a blockage by pouring a solution down the drain. Some people recommend mixing boiling water with vinegar and baking soda, but there is really no reason to try mixing solutions alone. Simply go to your local hardware store and pick up a bottle of drain cleaner and follow the instructions on the bottle. If this does not work, you may need to call your Clogged Drain Repair Toronto.

Try a stamp

Sometimes clogged drains occur because large foreign bodies, such as lumps of hair, food or toilet paper, get stuck in the pipes. Solution cleaning solutions do not necessarily solve this type of problem. In this case, you will want to grab a standard plunger and try to remove the materials in the pipes. Put a little bit of water in the sink you are trying to skip. If you throw a sink with an overflow hole or a double drain sink, stuff a cloth into the hole that you do not throw to get proper suction.

Wash traps and hoses

If the piston does not work, consider using a hose, otherwise known as a cable auger, to check the trap and pipes under the sink. This is where a plumbing project can quickly go from a simple DIY to a complicated mess. If you are not comfortable disassembling plumbing pipes, or if you simply do not know how to use a auger properly, you should seriously consider calling your Wilmington plumber to help with the job.

Washing machine miserable

Does your washing machine give you a problem? A common problem with the washing machine occurs when the sink fills up and moves around to wash the clothes, but then does not drain properly, leaving you with a bit of soft clothes that you can not put in the dryer. This is not always a drain problem and in this case you will want to make sure that the hoses leading away from your washing machine are not broken. If it does not work, call a repairer to check the switches and the water pump in the washing machine itself. You may simply have a problem with the sink that your washing machine drains into, in which case you can try the piston or hose method.

Addressing floor drains

Floor drains are not so common anymore, but they are still found, especially in basements and garages, where it may be necessary to transport water away from larger household appliances. It is very likely that these drains are clogged with soap scum, bacteria and even excess laundry. You will need a plumber with a powerful electric auger to help clear this type of drain.
