3 Fitness Challenges to Kick Off the New Year

Posted by Reebok on January 2nd, 2021

The New Year is coming up and you know what that means—it’s resolutions season. But, as you probably know from personal experience, New Year’s resolutions rarely last. For better or worse, by the end of January, we’re either bored with them or have moved onto something better. How about, instead of forming resolutions this year, you try a 30-day fitness challenge to kick the year off with a bang? Grab your gym shorts and lace up your training shoes and try any of these three challenges.

Set a New Record Every Day

Who doesn’t love setting a new personal best? It’s the culmination of hours, days and weeks of training. Although PRs aren’t typically an everyday thing, who says they can’t be? While you’re likely not going to set a new squat PR every single day, why not try to do one more rep of a lighter weight than you did the previous workout?

Or, maybe instead of focusing on the big goal, aim for a small PR each workout, with every day bringing something new. On Monday, you could aim to row further in 5 minutes than before even if it’s just a few additional meters. On Tuesday, you can try to do one more pull-up than the last time. This cycle can repeat and for an entire month, you’ll have a new PR to look forward to each workout.

Try a New Exercise Every Day

You have your routine and have a set of exercises that you execute flawlessly. Do you ever try new things? It can be easy to get too caught up in our routines, but with thousands upon thousands of different exercises out there, you could be missing out. To kick off the year, try out a whole new bunch of exercises, aiming to include one in every workout.

From kettle bell swings to power cleans, there are countless new exercises that you can add to your fitness vocabulary, with each one targeting different muscles or serving a different purpose. If you want to improve some of your weaknesses or just make your workouts more exciting, this is a great challenge. Lace up your cross training shoes and get started.

Go on a Cardio Streak

What better way to shake off the holiday rust and kick your routine into high gear than going on a cardio streak? If you’re not usually a cardio-focused athlete, this will be even more challenging, but even seasoned runners will find 30 consecutive days of cardio difficult. Set the rules based on your current abilities and choose a form of cardio that fits your schedule and preferences. It’s all about consistency, so you don’t need to shoot for the moon with every session; just make sure you do it every day.
