New Hope for Men with Erectile Dysfunction

Treatments for erectile dysfunction have been unchanged for more than 20 years. The standard treatment - a prescription drug such as Viagra or Cialis - allows most men to achieve an erection, but does not reverse or cure the underlying condition.

Recently, clinical researchers have found that Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (LI-ESWT), commonly called shockwave therapy, can actually make long-term improvements in men suffering from vascular erectile dysfunction. Vascular ED is caused by poor blood flow; it’s the most common cause of erectile dysfunction.

Shockwave therapy can break up plaque that restricts blood flow, and can actually generate new blood vessels through a process called angiogenesis.

Shockwave therapy is actually not new... it’s been sued for many years to treat a variety of conditions, including injuries, achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis. Its use as an ED treatment is relatively recent, dating back just a few years.

The therapy is usually administered in a clinic, over a period of several weeks. Treatments are quite expensive; a complete series typically costs several thousand dollars. There are also home treatment units available. One of these, the Phoenix, was created by a clinic operator to match the specifications and protocols of clinical equipment.

Clinical studies show that shockwave therapy works best for men with mild to moderate vascular ED. It’s not a perfect treatment for all men, but for the first time in 20 years, there is a new option for men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
