Visit the most famous summer palace in our city- Catherine Palace, about 20 km from the city, it was one of the royal summer residences.

Created by an Italian architect Rastrelli for Peter the Great’s wife Catherine I, the palace became a favorite summer residence for her daughter, Elizabeth, and next tsarina- Catherine The Great (Catherine II)

The palace is an endless suite of gilded Baroque rooms with famous Amber Room somewhere in the middle and was called “the jewelry piece” by contemporaries who saw it for the first time. Elizabeth, Peter the Great’s daughter, loved luxury and always tried to get the best. Her palace will try to overwhelm you with wealth and elegance. Elizabeth loved balls and masquerades. Find out more about the 18 century dances; imagine coming to a ball there dressed in the traditional XVIII century clothes. The ballroom is the biggest hall in all palaces outside of Saint Petersburg. See why the place in nicknamed the light gallery. Try to guess which doors are real ones and which are only mirrors that reflect candle light and make the space look larger. Look at your own reflection in the endless gallery but be careful.

During WWII the palace was completely ruined and the Amber Room was stolen by the Nazi; though on the whole it has been restored and the Amber Room fully recreated ( opened for the wide public in 2003; it took 25 years to restore it !!) they keep opening new and new rooms for the public every year: so even if you are the second time visitor be prepared to find something you didn't see during your first visit there!

The Palace is the world known architectural masterpiece so be ready to stand in 4 hours long line to get inside, if your choice is an independent visit….. or book a tour there with Dancing Bear Tours to avoid any inconveniences!
