Different Kinds of Hoists

Posted by Nostra Homes on January 11th, 2021

The age-old problem of lifting or lowering of heavy load has been efficiently managed with the help of hoists, lifts and cranes. Although the purpose of hoist and a lift is the same, yet both differ from each other in functioning.

Hoist vs Lift

The hoist is a primary component of the crane that helps move the load vertically. It has amounted trolley and moves along one or more horizontal beams. Among two designs of hoist, you have chain hoist or wire rope hoist that can be operated manually or powered electrically or pneumatically.

A chain hoist is an efficient and useful equipment for lifting and lowering heavy loads on vertical plains. It is commonly used in workplaces such as factories, industrial plants, construction sites and warehouses. These chain hoists use a heavy-duty chain and a hook for attaching to the load to be moved. Whereas, crane is a relatively complex device compared to hoist and is used for moving loads in various directions.

Unlike a hoist that can raise or lower heavy objects only vertically, a lift can move in both horizontally and vertically. A crane is operated through a simple machine including a hoist and like a wire rope or chain hoist; it is also extensively used for construction or industrial set-ups.

The hoists can be easily operated with the help of electricity, referred an electric hoists, to improve productivity, save time and reduce operational expenses.

What is an electric hoist?

It is an electrically powered hoist that is used to lift, lower and even move various heavy objects. Electric cranes are equipped with an induction motor and a brake system to ensure the load is held safely while moving.

The motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy which can facilitate lifting lowering or moving the heavyweight. For safety, it has a speed controller and an efficient brake that has an interlocking mechanism to prevent load from slipping back.

Like other chain lifts, a safe and economical electric hoist is employed in abundance in various working areas that include:

  • Construction sites
  • Warehouses
  • Car maintenance garages
  • Workshops
  • Dockyards
  • Large ship

Monorail Hoists

Like a chain hoist, as per the nature of work, you may use a monorail hoist for raising or lowering loads. With it, you can move loads up and down as well as forward or backward only as with monorail system lateral movement facility is not there.

Monorail hoist runs on a stationary beam and is attached on the trolley using a wire rope, steel cable or chain for raising, lowering and even suspending the load to the required location. Monorail hoist is considered a cost-effective alternative to bridge or gantry cranes for places with a restricted area. It is often used on single girder overhead crane, jib crane, single girder gantry crane and curve track.

It can be used efficiently and safely for various applications that include assembly operations, transport of materials from one fixed place to other such as workstations meant for painting, blasting or delivering hot metal from a furnace to a fixed pouring location.

With a lot of ongoing construction work and industrialization in India, demand for high-quality hoists and chain lifts is also on the increase.

RMS Industries, i.e. Loadmate manufacture monorail hoists, electric hoists and chain hoists matching all international standards.
