If you have an unfinished cabinet door, then it can be easier to update your cabinets. Instead of replacing your cabinet doors, you can just reface your cabinets. This is an easy and cost-effective way to make your cabinets look better. Finishing your unfinished cabinet doorcan be a less expensive and easy process. You can change the color of the cabinet, you don’t need to hire a professional or a contractor for this task. To paint or stain your cabinet doors and drawer fronts, here are some tips that can help you to have the desired look for cabinet doors.

1. Manage the cabinet doors and drawer fronts:

You can remove the drawer fronts and cabinet doors for refinishing. To remove the drawer fronts, you can use a screwdriver. Whenever you remove the cabinet doors or drawer fronts, just mark them with a number or location, so you can easily find where each cabinet door or drawer front goes. When you’ve removed the fronts, then you should put the wood panels on a cloth or newspaper. To remove the stain or paint from cabinets you can use a chemical stripper. But you should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations when using chemical strippers. During this work, you should always wear protective gear for your eyes and hands and always choose an open space to do this work. You should always prepare your surfaces first before applying the first coat.

2. Choose a finish color:

If you like the current natural color of your cabinet and don’t want to replace it then you can choose a finish color (polyurethane finish) that protects your cabinetry from stain damage and moisture. You can add a mix of colors to have a clean and modern look to your living space. You can also pick different colors for upper and lower cabinets. Before choosing the paint color for wood, you should always check the paint’s label. You should always consider the texture of your finish whether you choose matte, glossy and semi-gloss. If you want a more opaque appearance then you can choose a matte finish and you can also choose a glossy finish to add a reflection to your wood cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

3. Wood Sanding:

Sanding wood can make your cabinets and drawers smoother. You should always use fine-grit sandpaper for sanding the wood. To get a clean and smooth finish, just sand gently. Hand sanding is safer than powered hand sanders. If the doors of your cabinets and drawer fronts have some space, then sanding can help you to fill them in. During sanding always wear protective glasses and a mask. Once you’ve completed just make sure to wipe off all the wood dust of the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Whenever you sand the panels, always use a hand vacuum and have a damp cloth to remove the dirt from sanding.

You can either choose replacement or finishing to update your cabinets. But replacing takes lots of time and expensive too. So it’s better to refinish your unfinished cabinet doors than replacement.
