4 9mm Handguns You Should Consider That Do Not Get All the Hype

Posted by GunBroker.com on January 12th, 2021

The 9mm is the most common and most popular centerfire cartridge for a reason. It is considered by many to be the ultimate combination of power, performance, and controllable concealability. Understandably, such a popular cartridge is hosted by a massive collection of compatible handguns. Many of those handguns rank among the best in the world. While some of those exceptional pistols get the hype due them, others that are arguably just as worthy of praise are passed over. The following is a collection of underrated handguns.

HK P30L

The HK P30L, a full-size variant in the P30 family, may not have enjoyed the hype of the Glock 19, Sig 226, or Beretta 92, but that may be changing. The HK P30L has been a well but quietly respected handgun used by military and law enforcement units around the world. It is a sturdy, reliable, impressively modular workhorse boasting excellent accuracy and the top shelf engineering that H&K is renowned for. However, it may be the HK P30L’s inclusion as John Wick’s pistol of choice that brings this workhorse the acclaim it deserves.

Kahr PM9

The Kahr PM9 is a beautifully concealable single stack 9mm pistol that runs like a clock. This micro 9 has been an effective, trustworthy concealed carry or backup gun option for several years now. Despite that, the intuitive ergonomics and overall quality of the Kahr PM9 seem to catch people by surprise. Reviewers often seem shocked that this little pistol is such a winner.

Smith and Wesson PC Pro 986

The Smith and Wesson PC Pro 986 sounds unusual, in that it is a 9mm revolver. While not the cartridge you might immediately associate with a revolver, 9mm fits the format surprisingly well. The Smith and Wesson PC Pro 986 is just a brick house. It is solid, hefty, and it runs with a revolver’s wholesale reliability. It also boasts a 7-round cylinder, for those of you who prefer an extra slug or two in your piece. If you are looking for a more concealable 9mm wheelgun, check out the equally impressive Ruger LCR.

Remington R51 Gen 2

The Remington R51 is a revamped, 9mm iteration of John Pederson’s ergonomic masterpiece, the Remington 51. The R51 did not have the most auspicious birth. However, after the issues with the first generation of the R51 were enthusiastically cited by a whole lot of understandably perturbed gun owners, Remington stepped up and sorted them out. Generation 2 of the R51 makes this list because it thoroughly atoned for the misdeeds of Gen 1, but has remained somewhat obscure. That can be good news, however, for enterprising firearms fans looking to pick up a quality 9mm handgun at what is often a great rate.
