5 reasons to bonnet clean commercial carpets

When most people think of carpet cleaning, two images come to mind. The first is a van-mounted "steam" system with pressure and suction lines running into a housing. The other is a small "soft and suction" device that can be rented from a local grocery or home improvement store. Although these are very common ways to clean a carpet for homes, there are alternative methods that are better suited for commercial cleaning. There are actually four common methods of carpet cleaning that include foam cleaning, "dry" cleaning, extraction cleaning and bonnet cleaning.

"Motor wheel cleaning" is an adaptation of common methods of cleaning hard floors for carpets. A round absorbent bonnet is prepared before use by dampening it with water and then twisting it out if necessary so that it does not drip wet. Heavily soiled areas are sprayed with a bonnet cleaning solution. The absorbent bonnet is then attached to a low-speed (175 RPM) rotating floor machine, which needs a powerful motor due to the high friction involved. A special drive block is required to keep the bonnet or pad from slipping off. Dirt is absorbed into the pillow as it circulates across the rug. The bonnet must be turned or replaced when the surface of the cushion stops absorbing soil. The bonnet can be washed out and reused as needed. Sometimes carbonated water is used to provide better soil suspension and lower the pH level of the cleaning solution. There are many reasons why bonnet cleaning should be the preferred method of cleaning commercial quality carpets:

1. Bonnet cleaning maximizes the use of equipment that any professional cleaning company must already own. In tough economic times, many people buy a mop, bucket, broom and vacuum cleaner and call themselves "professional cleaners". Genuine professional cleaning companies have commercial quality equipment that start-ups simply cannot afford and do not know how to use properly. Swing arm machines, all-in-one floor machines and car washers are ideal for this cleaning method. They work even better if they release cleaning solution while in use. Although these machines are expensive and were originally designed to clean floors on hard surfaces, they are easily adapted to bonnet cleaning carpets.

2. Bonnet cleaning is the most aggressive method of cleaning dirty carpets. This is especially true when using motorcycle helmets with scrub strips. The possible disadvantages of bonnet cleaning include distortion of piles and fiber damage, vortex marks, wear on carpets due to invisible hazards (including sand, pebbles or staples) and buildup of detergent. Although the high level of friction and weight of the drive devices can damage carpets if not used properly, a competent cleaner can get amazing results from this method by incorporating certain safety precautions. Thoroughly vacuum all areas to be cleaned and often confirm that both the carpet and the bonnet are moist enough for the bonnet to move freely over the carpet without heating the carpet fibers.

3. Engine cleaning has an extremely short drying time. Carpets cleaned by the bonnet can dry in as little as thirty (30) minutes. It can take even less if loop-shaped drying caps are used when a rug is cleaned. This can be compared to twelve (12) to 24 (24) hours of drying time for wet cleaning methods. Other advantages of the bonnet cleaning method are fast cleaning time (especially important in large, open areas) and minimal soaking up of stains.

4. Cleaning of bonnet is cheap for the customer. Since most commercial cleaning companies already own all the necessary equipment for Bonnets cleaning, it is a cheap service to provide. The savings are usually transferred to the customer. This results in cleaning costs equal to or less than other methods.

5. There are many models of bonnet cushions. The most common is a lid profile cap with scrub strips for further scrubbing treatment. Some helmets lack strips, but are designed with a combination of both bow and cut ends. The cut ends absorb while the looped ends scrub your rugs clean. Microfiber pads are very absorbent and easy to wash after use. Drying caps have longer fibers, which are very absorbent. The many different helmets allow you to tailor your cleaning to the carpet and ground level you encounter.
