What is CT Imaging Used For?

Going in for a medical procedure – even a routine test – can be a little frightening if you don’t know what to expect. When it comes to CT imaging, this simple diagnostic procedure is quite painless and it can tell your doctor a whole lot about what’s going on inside your body.

What Is It?

CT imaging specialists are called in to help doctors see what’s going on inside a patient’s body. If your doctor has ordered such a test, he might be looking for such things as broken bones, blood clots, signs of heart disease, or internal bleeding. This test can also be helpful for detecting cancer.

How Does it Work?

When you visit an imaging facility, you’ll find this particular type of test is only a little more involved than a standard x-ray. The technician will take a series of pictures using special x-ray equipment that provides the ability to take a cross-sectional picture of your body. With these pictures, your doctor will be able to see if something internal is causing whatever issue you are both concerned about.

CT imaging involves lying on a table as it passes through the equipment. While this can be a little unnerving, it’s quite painless. In some cases, a contrast dye might be used to help the images show up better. If that’s the case for your test, you might be asked to show up a little early to help the technician get you prepared.

A CT scan allows your doctor to use advanced technology to get an idea of what’s going on inside. This is a pretty simple test that doesn’t take much time.
