When you are tring to find the best budget backpack for your needs, you shouldn’t just look at price. You need to consider some key elements to ensure you are making a quality purchase. Here, we are going to discuss those key elements.

Capacity

Simply put, you need to know how much stuff your pack can carry. If you are looking for a day pack, you’ll want something smaller than if you are looking for a backpacking pack. Here is a chart to know the size you need:

Backpack Capacity Chart:

Duration of Hike

Recommended Backpack Capacity

Half-Day Hike

20 liters or less

Full-Day Hike

20-40 liters

1-3 Nights

40-50 liters

3-5 Nights

50-70 liters

5+ Nights

80-110+ liters

Pockets

If you need a water bladder spot, cell phone pockets, waterproof pockets, an area for your sleeping bag, or some other item, look for a bag that has those features. If you want something simple, maybe you can get a pack with just one large compartment. Just know what you want, and look for that.

Comfort

Look for packs with hip straps, back and shoulder cushions, and good airflow. These bags will be more comfortable than ones without.

Durability & Materials

Look for nylon based materials, canvas, or other sturdy materials. Be sure to read reviews.

Waterproofing

Look for a pack that has either a rain fly, a waterproof section, or is fully waterproof. This will make your pack far more versatile. You can always elect to buy a separate rain cover, or a dry bag to place in your bag.

When choosing a pack, be sure to look at all of the above features.
