What is CANDYFLOSSand how is it made?

CANDYFLOSS is probably one of the very few sweet treats we can eat as an adult that instantly transports us back to our childhood but what exactly is candyfloss and how is the delicious fluffy stuff made? Candyfloss, although you might not be aware is exactly the same as cotton candy. Both names came from its original name of fairy floss. It was given the name fairy floss in 1897 by two Nashville candy makers who created an electric machine that would automatically spin the sugar. They later sold it to the St Louis World’s Fair in 1904 where it suddenly became very popular.

The way in which candyfloss is made explains the way it’s shaped like puffs or clouds. More often than not candyfloss contains only two ingredients, sugar and food colouring (this actually makes it a low fat treat). A small bowl in the centre of the machinery warms up the sugar before it presses it through little holes. Here it spins out like floss into a larger bowl that surrounds the heated bowl. Candyfloss makers often use sticks to gather up the cloud of floss though if it isn’t served immediately it’s usually put into large plastic bags to keep its texture and freshness. It doesn’t have a brilliant shelf life though this is usually testament to its fresh ingredients unlike the stuff on supermarket shelves, which claim to last for months.

Candyfloss has remained popular throughout the years with children and adults alike. Whether they get it from the local fair, circus or even from someone who provides quality candyfloss SUPPLIES such as Empire Popcorn and Confectionary Company, there’s never a bad time to eat it. Its appearance and colour hasn’t changed much over the years still predominately coming in either pink or blue.

In spite of the rather high sugar content, candyfloss isn’t that bad in terms of calories. A typical serving that you’d get at the fair has around 100 calories, which is less than most cans of fizzy drink. This makes it all the more enjoyable and an even better snack when you’re thinking of party food for a child’s party.

At Empire Popcorn and Confectionary Company they sell original and fresh fairground candyfloss. Sold in large tubs this fresh and hand made candyfloss is one of a kind. Available to be delivered direct to your door in a variety of purchase options that make it great for large parties as well as your own personal indulgence. Unlike the dreaded supermarket shelf candyfloss, its freshness speaks for it and Empire insist on a maximum of just a month until it must be consumed otherwise you risk losing its great taste.
