The subject of nofollow links has often generated quite a debate so we headed over to Wecan Media’s SEO Manchester Team to find out why we’re now being told to stop saying no to nofollow.

Craig, Wecan media’s SEO expert begins by telling us that it’s important to remember the overall strategy and what it is you’re trying to achieve. No single strategy should be solely about generating links. There are always other objectives otherwise it will never be or look natural. Craig explains that at Wecan Media they have multiple objectives aside from just generating links. Everything must have traffic driving potential and help with opening the brand to a new audience. So here are Craig’s top three reasons why we shouldn’t be saying no to no follow links.

1. They still have traffic driving potential

Something that we’re all aware of is that we should only ever be trying to generate links from websites that are relevant to the client’s core and has a genuine audience. If we’re doing it right then all links should have a potential to drive traffic to the client’s site. This means that there should be the chance of generating a conversion. Obviously not every link will drive thousands of visits and conversions but there needs to be a chance that people seeing the link would want to click and have some chance of converting.

2. They can still lead to followed links

By grabbing a nofollow link on a genuine website you open yourself up to the chance of other bloggers seeing it and wanting to cover the subject themselves. This could lead to your client gaining links through the original nofollow link. Craig explains how at his SEO agency they’ve seen a client gain a nofollow link on an authoritative website that has lead to followed links from other bloggers on numerous occasions.

3. They can help with future rankings

In spite of much speculation regarding nofollow links and their value, along with Google insisting that nofollow links will not pass Page Rank there have been studies that have suggested otherwise. Most recently a post by a Simon Penson that suggested nofollow links and even brand mentions with no links might well be part of the algorithm in future.

Craig feels that at Wecan Media, their SEO Manchester agency success with natural SEO campaigns rely on having a mixture of follow and nofollow links. Nofollow links bring along with them other benefits and as long as the links are in-line with the strategy overall then success for clients should still be seen.
