Best Tips to increase the concentration level of your Child

Posted by Steffen Carter on January 19th, 2021

Understanding the ways of children is not easy as they function on a very different method in terms of thinking, and in the ways that they express their opinions. Private tutors and group tuition teachers find this a challenging aspect of teaching and there is no doubt that it is an actual hurdle to face.

Various factors come into play when it comes to cognitive development of a child, for example,

  • Family influences

  • Environmental influences

  • Socioeconomic status

  • Gender

  • Genetics

  • Language

  • Personality

  • Prenatal development

  • Societal influences

In order to help children, gain concentration, it requires lots of patience on parent’s part and even more patience and cooperation from children’s side as well!

So, here are some tips that parents can follow!

DON’T FORCEFEED

Helicopter parenting inevitably causes parents to force-feed their children in many circumstances. In the most literal sense, from shoving food down the throat to compelling children to participate in competitions and take up enrichment classes, everything is mechanised and its exhausting for kids.

Why does this impede their ability to concentrate on tasks?

When parents influence children’s every decision and when their words infiltrate children’s thought process, it hinders their ability to focus on deriving a solution by themselves for a problem. Parents are only supposed to guide their children and never should they ever offer the “right” answers on the go.

CREATIVE THINKING

Children need to be given the mind space and freedom to explore outcomes and think about solutions to problems that they are presented with. The natural curiosity and inquisitively that children possess is an advantage, and parents need to teach their children to make use of this advantage to the best of their ability.

How can you engage your child in creative thinking?

Here are some pointers that parents can take note of and implement:

  • Make them questions the things around them

  • Give them the opportunities to express themselves

  • Provide them with challenges

  • Give them books to read to spend their free-time

  • Provide them with the freedom to think

  • Do not offer help until they ask for it

 LET THEM PLAY!

Children are deprived of physical activities these days; the only time they get to play is during Physical Education periods in school curriculum. Brain functioning study has increased in the field of sports sciences.

It is evident that acute physical activity shows enhanced cognitive abilities such as attention, concentration, memory and processing speed (Reigal, Rafael E et al. “Physical Fitness Level Is Related to Attention and Concentration in Adolescents.” Frontiers in psychology vol. 11 110. 4 Feb. 2020, doi:10.3389/fpsyg.2020.00110).

As your child plays outdoors, the running and jumping gets the blood pumping with increases overall cardiovascular system health, breathing capacity as well as musculoskeletal strength. This forms the foundation for building stamina and it is the secret door to increased cognitive function and mental clarity. Unfortunately, this is lacking in many children.

Your ultimate takeaway is that children need the mental freedom and need to be given the opportunity to think creatively. They need to understand the making mistakes is part of the learning process as well!
