Learn More About Paint Thickness Gauge

Posted by PCTE Industrial on January 20th, 2021

By definition, the paint thickness gauge is a device that is used to measure the thickness of the dry film. It is also known as a dry paint meter. This equipment plays an important role in the coating (alias painting) industry. Mainl      y because it has an impact on the overall cost and quality in the coating process. With the help of the paint thickness gauge, you can decide on the expected lifetime of the paint, along with its fineness and performance. Most of the time, experts use the gauge to decide if the paint meets industrial standards.

Measuring Dry Paint Thickness

There are two ways of measuring dry paint thickness: Destructive and Non-Destructive Thickness.

During destructive thickness measurements, the coating is carefully cut. Special equipment is used to cut the coating. Then, the thickness is measured.

During non-destructive thickness, methods that wouldn’t damage the coating are utilized. This includes technologies like magnetic induction. Also, some tend to use Eddy Current Thickness measurement techniques. The non-destructive thickness methods can be used on non-metallic and steel-based surfaces. This includes surfaces like aluminium and steel.

Digital thickness measuring gauges are used to measure the thickness of substrates made of metal. On the other hand, electromagnetic induction based equipment is used for measuring coatings on ferrous materials.

Factors to be considered when choosing a paint measuring gauge

Multiple factors to be considered when you pick a paint thickness measuring gauge. Here are a few crucial parameters to be considered:

1. Material: You need to be specific about the materials you are going to test. If the coating has a powdered surface, you need to opt for instruments that use magnetic or eddy currents. Remember, based on the material, your paint thickness readings will differ from one kind to another.

2. Accuracy: You need to focus on how precise the equipment will be. The entry-level paint thickness gauge will have the precision of a ballpark. If you are working at home, this level of accuracy is enough. But commercial entities need better levels of precision.

3. Ease: The equipment has to be easy to use. It must be both approachable, and the display needs to be readable.
