Brazilian Jujitsu is a martial art fighting discipline and martial art based on joint locks, chokeholds, and submission attacks. It focuses mainly on the art of taking down an opponent to the floor, controlling one's adversary, taking a dominant position on the mat, and applying a variety of different techniques to either submit him or her via chokeholds or joint holds. This martial art is an evolution of the Japanese Aikido and Japanese Judo but was initially started as an alternative to the latter. As such, it has its own unique style, which is not commonly found in other martial arts.
The primary emphasis of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is on ground techniques. Although the emphasis is primarily on ground fighting techniques, the practitioner will also learn different range-of-motion techniques, submission hold and top-game strategy from his or her training. The reason for this is to prevent an opponent from standing up and making the match simply a contest of who can get the better execution of various techniques. Mounting techniques are used to keep opponents on their back or on their knees, allowing you to wrench your opponent's arm to their chest with your legs and apply a strangle hold. The rear mount is used to apply a rear naked choke, while the side control is used to control the opponent's arm, hips, and shoulders.
The omoplata is a technique that is very similar to the rear mount, but it uses your legs to break free of the grip. The America belt is a technique that is commonly referred to as the nape kick. This kick is not only useful in breaking free during the armbar, but it is also extremely effective in controlling the opponent's legs and applying the triangle.
