Located within the Fengjie County of Chongqing Municipality, the Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) situates at the north of the mouth of Qutang Gorge on the Yangtze River. Going downstream through Fengjie County by ship, people will see the mouth of Qutang Gorge within the distance. High on the towering hills within the north of Yangtze River stand clusters of castles and homes that are hided within the lush trees. The Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) is surrounded by waters on 3 sides and mountains on the left side. Lonely standing among magnificent and steep mountains and waters in Kui Gate of Yangtze, the Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) is extraordinarily stunning with its imposing image. To climb from the foot of the mountain, one has to take nearly one thousand steps to achieve the highest of the mountain--Peak of Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City). There, visitors will read and admire the majesty of Kui Gate of Yangtze. Walking to the rear of the temple, which is situated on the mountain high, visitors will see the Caoting River winding down from Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) Mountain into the Yangtze River. Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) Temple has a design style of Ming and Qing Dynasties, such as Wuhou Temple, Mingliang Palace Hall, and Star Observing Pavilion etc.

Three statues of Zhuge Liang are worshiped in Wuhou Temple. Legend has it that Zhuge Liang used to observe the constellation at midnight within the Star Observing Pavilion. As the key building of Baidi Cheng Temple, Mingliang Temple was built in 1533. In Mingliang Temple, there are statues of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, who are famous heroes throughout the Three Kingdom Period (240-280). On either side of Mingliang Temple and Wuhou Temple, tablets of each dynasty are kept there. In Baidi Cheng Temple, there are exhibition rooms to point out historical and cultural relics since Neolithic Time moreover as famous paintings and poems of the masters in any respective times.

These ancient buildings and cultural relics add a lot of luster to the Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City). Baidi Cheng Temple boasts wealthy prose inscriptions and historical relics of all dynasties. For instance, there are the famous willow-leaf-shaped bronze swords in East Zhou Period (about 2500 years ago), the hanging coffins relics of the Han and Jin Dynasties (220 B.C.-420), seventy three inscriptions of poems and paintings since the Sui and Tang Dynasties (581-907). Throughout the Three Kingdom Period, Liu Bei was defeated by General Lu Xun from Wu Kingdom and retreated to Baidi Cheng. Feeling ashamed to fulfill his subordinates, he ordered the construction of Yong An (Eternal Peace) Palace among the Baidi Cheng and shortly died of sorrow and depression there. Before his death, he entrusted his regime and his son to the prime minister--Zhuge Liang. Currently within the Baidi Cheng Temple in Baidi Cheng, colorful statues are erected vividly to recreate the case where Liu Bei entrusted orphanage. Besides, there are pottery, ancient relics and over a hundred items of calligraphy and paintings written or drawn by masters of all times. Tablets cluster stands on the eastern and western sides with inscription of the Sui Dynasty of over 1340 years' history.

In ancient China, famous poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Liu Yuxi, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Fan Chengda, Liu Yong all had climbed on Baidi Cheng and traveled around Kui Gate and so left several poems describing those scenic spots. Therefore, the Baidi Cheng (White Emperor City) is additionally endorsed as "Poem Town".

After the completion of the Three Gorges Project, the water level is going to be raised. The Baidi Cheng is going to be surrounded by water in four sides which helps create a fairy land in the city, with astonishing beauty and charming scenery.
