While not as common, there are also a number of scholarships awarded for charitable or similar efforts that are above and beyond the norm. They are usually referred to as scholarships for good citizenship.

Looking for scholarships can be a challenge, because there are so many out there, and the application processes are usually pretty involving. It takes work to track down a scholarship that you qualify for. Once you find one, you have to put together an application package with essays, forms and transcripts. This whole process can seem a bit tedious, but when you consider the possible benefits, it really makes sense try.

One of the things to remember is that you have a much better chance of winning a scholarship if less people apply. That means that if you apply for more scholarships, you automatically have a better chance at winning one. However, you must apply for scholarships in order to do so.

Wealthy people and special organizations set aside money for students who have the same interests as them. A billionaire who is an avid skier may set aside several hundred thousand dollars one year for college bound individuals who like to ski. A multi-millionaire may one day decide to set up a scholarship for students who share his same passion in playing the guitar. Most of these scholarships can be had by simply writing a compelling essay stating your interest in the scholarship in question.

Governments often offer quite large Scholarships. Check out your municipal, state/provincial, and federal government website to see if there are any awards to which you can apply.

If they can't read it, they probably won't waste their time trying. If you print poorly, make several copies of the application form and practice getting all your information down correctly on the copies. When ready, copy your final information neatly on the original application form.

If you grants don't get to go to school for free, it's not the end of the world, but it's also not the end of your scholarship search. Keep looking for ways to reduce the financial burdens of college. Always keep searching, and you're bound to find something that you qualify for. If you apply and get rejected, use it as motivation. If you let the disappointment get to you, you'll forget how proactive bout your life this whole scholarship search has made you.
