Role of Oxygen Sensors

Positioned right in the center of exhaust pipe, the oxygen sensor helps to detect lean and rich mixtures. What happens is that the formation of a certain chemical reaction in the sensor tends to generate voltage. When the engine’s computer reads the voltage to determine whether the mixture is lean or rich, it accordingly adjusts the amount or quantity of fuel entering the engine, thus keeping the perfect ratio stable and performance of engine absolutely smooth.

Car’s engines demand maximum amount of oxygen for smooth and efficient performance. Now, the amount of oxygen required depends on a number of factors, such as, temperature of the air, altitude, load on the engine, barometric pressure, etc.
